The Simpsons renewed for season 23...

Though I don't watch new episodes of The Simpsons very much these days, I'm glad they're still making new shows. A world in which there are no new episodes of The Simpsons is a very scary thing to imagine.

Do you, by any chance, remember life before 1990? That said, I agree. The Simpsons should go on forever. I just wish the DVD sets would come out more than once a year.

This "even if it sucks, it's still better than almost everything else on TV" argument is so weak. I tire of it. So I should watch something that sucks just because there's other stuff that sucks more? A world in which there are no new episodes of "The Simpsons" is a lovely fantasy. Then I can tell people, "The Simpsons" was a great show", without feeling sad when I have to explain why I say "was" instead of "is". :(

I wish people would just stop watching so it would go away already. Hasn't anyone learned to give up after 14 terrible seasons? It's hard to quit something you're used to, but it's not impossible. I want the show's staff to stop cranking out mediocre seasons and put all their efforts into making a kickass movie sequel. I can't imagine the show ever delivering a great season again, but I think a solid sequel is still a possibility.

Presactly. You would think a board full of sci-fi fans would take Sturgeon's second law into consideration here.

As he pointed out, 90% of everything is crap.

So, even if you think the Simpsons is "still better" than ninety percent of what's on television you've only established it is marginally better than crap.

It seems like the people that "don't watch" the Simpsons are the ones who are completely obsessed with it (or with knocking it). People put way too much thought into this show.

I still watch it and still enjoy it.

Speaking only for myself, I think I made it clear that I watch it...in that I tune in and watch an ep as long as it entertains me. My point is that the episodes that entertain just don't come along as much as they used to...and they are nowhere near as good as anything in even the first ten season (let alone the golden age of seasons 2-7).

Also, and again speaking only for myself, the only reason I complain at all is because I wish the producers would either take the criticism to heart...or quit before no one remembers that show WAS once good.

I still watch it and still enjoy it.

And, hey, that's your right. It's just a TV show after all. It's also your right to watch and enjoy "Two and Half Men," "According to Jim," and/or the David Spade sitcom if you like those.

:techman:

Yeah, I know one of the main reasons Fox and a lot of the people working on the show keep it going is money. I've thought about this when trying to rationalize why this terrible show is still on the air. Of course Al Jean and company love the financial security running this show gives them and their families and wouldn't want to give that up. Still, haven't they made enough money already? I'm sure they're millionaires off this show by now. Why should we the fans have to suffer watching our beloved series run into the ground just so they can make a couple million more?

I like all three of those shows. I don't think people realize "According to Jim" is supposed to be a "dumb" comedy, in that you sit down, stop thinking, laugh and enjoy it for what it is. I can't help myself, I like the show. Plus, Courtney Thorne-Smith is gorgeous.

Don't understand why people want this show to end. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Why is that so hard to understand?

I just wish the endings had something, anything to do with the beginnings. The plots are too corkscrew-style. Homer buys a windmill and it's hilarious. 23 minutes later it's some bullshit Lisa tries to save whales foolishness.

The Germans buy the Power Plant episode is the best. Episode. Ever.

"Burns Verkaufen der Kraftwerk".

Yeah, that is a terrific episode, and you know what's sad? I'm not the most dedicated fan, yet I know every episode title, from memory, from Seasons 1 to 10.

Why should we the fans have to suffer watching our beloved series run into the ground just so they can make a couple million more?

I'm not suffering, I just don't watch. I usually forget it's on too.

I don't watch either, but it makes me sad that this show is out there stinking up the airwaves after how wonderful the early seasons were. I'm sentimental that way. :wah: I check in on it once in awhile and within 5 minutes, I get depressed and regret that I even bothered.

There is a gem of a Homer-ism in there every once in a while. So far, my favorite is "Oh, why do my actions have consequences?!" from "Rednecks & Broomsticks" (Season 21).

I don't know. You get the feeling there are people who spend every waking moment intensely offended that the show still exists. Well, any show that is still capable of generating headlines, attracting major stars, and, well, GETTING RENEWED 23 years later needs no further proof that it remains relevant and popular. The exact same thing goes for Saturday Night Live. There are obsessives who spend every day wishing SNL would get cancelled, conveniently ignoring how it makes headlines every few weeks, continues to attract major talent and continues to spinoff major talent (Tina Fey, anyone?).

I agree. If you don't like the show, ignore it. Clearly enough people are watching it and enjoying it otherwise Fox, them of the hair-trigger cancellation button, would kill it. When they stop watching, or when enough of the major cast members decide to retire (I don't buy into the "we'll use soundalikes" argument, not with this show), then the show will end. It's only a half hour out of the week. Go play Warcraft or surf for porn or watch that Avatar Blu-ray that comes out next Tuesday if you really need something to make you forget The Simpsons. ;)

Let this be a lesson ... never try. :p

Not really. I was born in 1985, so pretty much all my life that I can remember The Simpsons has been in production. A world without The Simpsons to me is like a cake without icing.

I still love the show. It can stay on the air as long as it wants, as far as I'm concerned. It's still clever and funny, even if it doesn't have the same "heart" that it had in the first 8 seasons or so.

As Homer would say, "Trying is the first step toward failure."

I think you fail to realise that the people wanting The Simpsons to end aren't haters, we're big fans of the show, we care about the show and its legacy, and we have no confidence that season 23 will be anything above average.

15 years ago, The Simpsons was that funniest, the smartest, the classiest show on TV. It was a cultural phenomenon that was enjoyed by hundreds of millions of people around the world. That's just not the case any more, The Simpsons is now a standard dumb sitcom that has not only given on up achieving greatness again, it seems to have forgotten that it was ever great at all. If The Simpsons was a new show just starting now, few would watch and it would be cancelled, the reason that it's still around is because of the brand recognition from the glory days.

I used to be an obsessive Simpsons fan, it has been a part of my life since I was 4 and I used to freak out if I missed an episode. The sad truth is that The Simpsons can't be described as a great show any more because the average-to-bad seasons have overtaken the good ones. The longer this goes on, the more that legacy is diminished.

It's just sad, is all. :(
