The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien

Personally, I was bored to tears by The Silmarillion. I'd only recommend it if you have a real interest in the history of the world behind LOTR. Otherwise, I'd give it a pass.

Children of Hurin is a good read. I've still got Silmarillion knocking around somewhere to be re-read, it's been far too long since I read it.

Any successful adaptation of The Silmarillion would probably have to concentrate on probably five major storylines, such as Fëanor's feud with Morgoth, Beren and Lúthien's quest for the Silmaril, the Children of Húrin, Tuor's adventures in Gondolin, and Eärendil's journey to Valinor and the War of Wrath. Even then, it'd be difficult. There's so much going on that it'd be hard to compress all the important stuff even into five movies.

That's about what I was thinking. It wouldn't be easy, but it could be done. I'd keep the Valar in the background and focus on the Elves and Men vs. Melkor.

I'd also love to see a movie on the Downfall of Numenor.
