"The Ship's Stores will have it!"

Hi, all:

Do you think what Tasha was referring to was more in line with the modern military definition of "stores" (basically, a supply closet or warehouse) or the more familiar usage (a retail shop)?

Oh fuck me, but I wish this were a joke.
I hear they have a lovely Woolworth's over on the USS Ronald Reagan.

I think Tasha Yar was referring to actual stores, to acquire merchandise from, in this instance. Although, the ship would also have what are referred to, in the traditional sense, as "ship's stores". These would just be their version of a quartermaster or supply section. We heard Kirk refer to these several times, during TOS.

Keep in mind the original idea, which they were still working to during the writing of the first half of S1, was that the Enterprise was like a mobile starbase, on a long-duration deep space mission (per background materials, including the Bible). A good analogy would be an Old West US Army fort. Part garrison, part homestead, part trading post. Having a Promenade or "mall" was part of that thinking.

^When your teachers told you there was no such thing as a stupid question... they lied. Don't sweat it. Many of TPTW behind later modern Trek didn't get it either. But you can be sure, the writers of first season Trek knew their ass from a hole in the ground, and did not envision retail shops on a military fucking vessel.

Since when has Star Trek been a reasonable facsimile of anything "military", though? Some writers, costumers, set builders or directors may have made a half-hearted effort in some episodes (although never two of them in the same one!), but despite all its right-wing pathos, Trek has never been convincing enough as a military story that we should sweat details like "can they have malls aboard without the sailors devolving into spineless muddle and requiring a doubling of the daily whippings?".

Besides, any of today's military ships is a pleasure cruiser compared with any from a century past. Why should that trend ever reverse itself?

Except that...you know...they DID. Or are you calling Probert, et al liars?

I suspect this post is alcohol-fueled so I'm probably talking to a wall here but there are small retail stores on the larger "military fucking vessels" of today's Navy! Get a clue!

I wonder why any replicator in anyone's quarters couldn't do exactly what Worf was doing with what I assume is a replicator in that episode.
Might be a simple case of the replicator in Worf's quarters being physically too small to produce the size gift that Worf may choose. If Worf were to decide on a crystal vase half a meter tall as a wedding gift, the standard sized replicator would be incapable of materializing it.

I think the idea of the Galaxy class, at least at this point in time, was that it was a city in space. Families lived on the Enterprise, so I think that it was the writers intent to make a reference to possible Malls/shops on the Enterprise.

Which I mentioned upthread as well:
When Tasha first mentioned the ship's stores, which was also mentioned by Rand in "Charlie X", I imagined it to be like the mini-exchange on board an aircraft carrier that sells things like candy bars, magazines, and other sundries to the crew.

So yep there are retail shops aboard military vessels, which are known as Ship's Stores.

Well in this day and age of the Defense Department outsourcing to private companies. I wouldn't be surprised if every nuclear aircraft carrier had a McDonalds and a Subway.

"Welcome aboard, Ensign McCheese. Lt. Commander Grimace will take you to your assigned duty station. Seaman! Mop these floors!"

"Robble, robble!"
