The Shawarma factor

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Of course I'm referring to the famous post credits scene from the Avengers.

I was watching a review of the new Spider-Man movie on YouTube and they brought up the post credits scene in that film and one guy just called it "the Shawarma" of tha movie.

How cool is that? Instead of us geeks referring to them as "post credits" scenes, let's just do what this guy did and call these little bits "the Shawarma". We could unite and thrust this kind of cool lingo to refer to more than just the food. With the popularity of post credits scenes in films, why not come up with a term for it? Kind of the new jump the shark or nuke the fridge.

I think the technical term is a 'sting' or 'stinger'.

Shawarma could be used to refer to post-credits scene that are more little joke scenes rather than ones that tease stuff for the sequel.

You do realise all of the pre-Avengers movies from Ironman on had these post-credits scences, right?!?

I do realize that.

i guess everyone on the board needs weveryhting spelled out.

Okay: Post credits sequences have appeared in fiolms for a long time, the last decade alone, they have been popping up in all kinds of science fiction and comic book films. With the popularity of the Avengers film, and how everyone (who has seen it) remembers the shot of them sitting around that restaurant, I am saying that the word could be used to describe post credit scenes going forward.

Is that such a hard concept to grasp?

Hmmm, Go on...I can be convinced if somebody could emotionally manipulate me - or post hot pics of Joe Manganiello for me to ogle.

Actually not everyone, it wasn't included in the version we got in the UK, we only got the Thanos one.

I realize that as well, sorry I didn't mention it.

My intention was to help the "geek community" coin a new phrase, as these post credit scenes - whether they are relevant to the story ot not- are becoming quite popular, and are becoming more engrained into our movie culture. If a phrase like nuke the fridge can be embraced by culture, then why not this, which has its origins in the most successful comic book film ever and the reference is catchy to those in the know.

Nah, that's lame. A forced meme if I ever saw one. I thought this topic was going to be about Shawarma business soaring since the Avengers came out. I'm disappointed.

I'd go along with "shawarma" for a post-credits scene that is tossed in for no good reason other than to make us all feel like fools for sticking around for it. :p

As in: "You're really staying? I heard it was a shawarma. I'll be in the lobby."

In contrast, the previous post-credit scene, with Thanos, provided some actual information about the next movie. So a post-credit scene that is worth sticking around for is a "thanos."

^But the shawarma scene was one of the funniest bits in the whole movie. It was definitely worth sticking around for.

Definitely worth sticking around for but different than all of the other post-credit scenes that Marvel has done. All of the others were teasers. This one was more of a "bueller". Just a fun thing tacked on to the end.

Since I already have a term for such scenes, shawarma doesn't work for me. :p

Yeah, strictly it's a "stinger" but most have been calling them "post-credits" scenes which at times is incorrectly used to refer to a scene that's after the main cast/title card credits (or animated sequence) but before the usual scrolling credits. Which is what I call a "mid-credits scene." For "Avengers" this was the scene with Thanos and Spider-Man had a mid-credits scene as well.

Calling them a "Shawarma" is, I dunno, silly. Avengers hardly started the trend and as good as that scene was it was hardly significant or noteworthy enough to rename the entire practice after that scene. I think calling it a "post credits" scene should continue as it best describes to people what it is. If you called it a "Shawarma" you'd only confuse people unfamiliar with the scene (one you'd have to really watch and read into to even know what they were eating in the first place. Friend of mine thought they were in a burger joint before I explained to him what was really happening.)

I like it. I shall adopt it into my verbiage if you start using "Tunk" in yours.

My argument is that people sue jump the shark without knowing where it came form... some people know it, but not everyone who uses it. Eventually it just becomes part of the lingo.

I still despise that the Trekkie "red shirt" term bled over into other pop culture references...even refering to the SA of Nazi Germany as "brown shirts"...oh, yeah, they did that before Trek. :)

People still sue Jump the Shark? No wonder the original website is gone. ;)
