The Romulan Prize

Any other fans out there of The Romulan Prize? It's an older TNG novel. I first read it after borrowing it from my mom when I was a teenager. I happen to be discussing favorite Trek novels with a friend, when he said it was his favorite too. I'd never even met someone else who'd heard of it, much less loved as much as me.

So what about you guys? Any other fans of this book?

I read it a long time ago, but I did remember liking it. I like Romulans and it's always good to see more of them.

Another person who read it a long time ago... I remember enjoying it quite a bit, but not much specific, except that the Romulans captured the Ent-D (right?) and it was a pretty tricky situation to get out of.

Pretty much the same situation for me. One of my first Trek novels, which I remember liking a lot (also a Romulan fan), but I also don't remember anything specific -- something about a huge warbird. I have been toying with the idea of rereading it as I recently got a copy for my collection.

Summary from MA:

Hermeticus 2 — a planet so shrouded in secrecy that few in the Federation even know of its existence. When a Romulan spy learns of the world, it becomes the centerpiece for a far-reaching Romulan plot. On routine patrol near the border of the Neutral Zone, the Starship Enterprise discovers an advanced Romulan Warbird prototype drifting lifeless in space. Investigating the vessel, Captain Picard is drawn into a plot that threatens the very foundation of the Federation. Now, with time running out, Captain Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise must stop the Romulans before the deadly secret of Hermeticus 2 overwhelms them all.
I must have been remembering a different story. I remember this one better now. :)

I won't spoil the plot for anyone, but yes, it is definitely a story about the Romulans getting the upper hand on the Enterprise crew for a bit, until some unlikely visitors equal the playing field. ;)

I read it when it was new. I however, cannot remember much of it. I bought alot of old TOS novels since I mainly read TNG and Ds9 when I was young and have recently enjoyed the new TNG Ds9 NOvels so i can get caught up to see whats going on. Sorry i am of no help!

With Masks by John Vornholt, The Romulan Prize is one of my favorite novels of TNG. I think it has a nice story and is rather well written and captivating.

Hope you out there looking for a copy, find one and enjoy reading it!

Good book,as someone said, you really can't go wrong with the Romulans.Remember when times were simpler, straight up standalone stories? No multi-part epics with a cast of thousands.

I need a new copy. I loved this one to death, pretty much literally - the cover's fallen off, and it's in danger of disintegrating. Masks was also one of my favorites, and is in a similar state. Spartacus, The Death of Princes, Chains of Command, and War Drums are also heavily worn from re-reading.

It's funny - all of a sudden, people are starting threads about books I love. There's a thread about this, another one about Betrayal, which may be my absolute favorite of all the pre-relaunch DS9 books.

I rather like the relaunch stuff, particularly DS9 and Destiny, but these weren't bad either.

Masks was also one of my favorites

I have to second that.

Quite a lot of those older TNG novels have something, but Masks remains my favorite Trek fiction to this very day.

The point of standalone adventures has been brought up, and it is true that story arcs have their merrits, but sometimes a decent stand alone story is everything one needs.

The Romulan Prize was being published before DS9 was on the air or at least not very far down the road, wasn't it? Don't want to spoiler anything, but some parts of the revelation would have worked so easily if DS9 had been on the air for a longer period of time, would they?
