The rift Kirk manages to send the car in.

In the meantime (and for those not conveniently nearby) here's the view from the Tri-State Tollway which crosses right through the middle of it.
You can actually see down into it from the closest lane. It's impressive.

...you drove your antique Corvette over the cliff too, huh? :)
A funny thing is that my father-in-law actually has a '60's red convertible Corvette. Would be dramatic!

I keep forgetting that you live Chicago...I live between I-55 and 355, so it's a bit of a drive anyway.
A southsider, too, eh? We live in Kendall County, not too far from you. We can get together sometime, if you want. But I warn you, I do not look like my avatar. I look like somebody's pudgy great-aunt, which I am. Pretty typical of someone's idea of a Star Trek fan. PM me if you want to.

Oh, that's the beauty of the internet, no? We fans are so full of surprises!

Just letting you know, however, that I am NOT a Cyke-ologist :)

Whoah; I got ahead of myself there. I'm only an aunt -- not a great aunt yet.

Thanks for the info - that "canyon" struck me as weirdly un-Midwestern - but of course, who knows how the landscape will be mangled and altered by the 23rd C. It never occurred to me that it might be man-made.

I wonder what the heck they were quarrying that would result in a long, narrow, deep gash in Iowa?

I also gotta wonder, why there are skyscrapers in Pacific Heights (and did they bulldozer it flat first?) :wtf:

Limestone. You've never been out here, have you. There are quarries all over the place.

Yep. Hundreds of them all over the state. Some pretty large. One of the more well-known Grant Wood landscapes, "Stone City", features a quarry near Anamosa that's still in use. (For those who don't know, Grant Wood was a native of eastern Iowa who lived from 1891 to 1942. He's most famous work is "American Gothic", that picture of a farmer holding a pitchfork with his daughter standing next to him.)

Weird how often this topic has come up on this BBS. Wonder why people have trouble with the idea of quarries in Iowa?
