The Return

After all these years I think it is still a great book. Would have made a great TV MINISERIES. I think, for the most part, Shatner's series has been pretty good.

A matter of taste I suppose, but its also been ages since I read either of them. I might think differently now. But it did seem like Ashes of Eden and the Return were by two completely different authors in a lot of ways.

Ugh! Avenger was awful. Having enjoyed The Return I picked up Avenger when it came out and was massively disappointed. That was the last Shatnerverse book I read. I don't suppose they improved after that?

I have to say, I've only actually read the first two in print, but I've listened to all the rest on tape, and I enjoyed the Mirror Universe trio betters than the "Captain's..." trio. The continuity porn was more bearable. I'm sad to hear about the bad reviews of the latest. I probably will still "read" it when the audiobook is in the cutout bin, though.

I haven't read any reviews of the Academy book. It actually had a premise that made me want to try another Shat-Novel.

Wow, it has been a long time since I read The Return, but I liked it. It was the first Shatner book I read, and I wish it were the last. :p

I remember thinking it was so cool when the Defiant-class Monitor showed up. Shelby was portrayed differently than she is in New Frontier: Much more serious and down to business now that I think about it. Not a complaint, just a comment.

There was some discussion of it here when it was published. IMHO, it was a fast, breezy read, but not a page of it rang true. Just like the other Shatnerverse books, pretty much.

I did a quick google search and found two, which almost seem to be reviews of two different books

TrekWeb: http://trekweb.com/stories.php?aid=470867edbb876

and a much kinder review at TrekMovie: http://trekmovie.com/2007/10/26/book-review-star-trek-academy-collision-course/

From one of the reviews - shurely shum mistke?

So how does Shatner depict the first meeting of Kirk and Spock? Kirk, hiding in a strip club after stealing a Starfleet vehicle and then trying to hide from the authorities, trips Spock, who was selling a stolen Vulcan artifact in the same club. Yes, you read that right.

:wtf: :wtf: :wtf: That's lame.

I read the trilogy surrounding his return and enjoyed them for the most part. Was nice to see Kirk back in action, though the plot was a bit out there. I quickly lost interest after that. For me, and many others, Trek has evolved far beyond one ship and one man.

The straw that broke the camel's back was reading the synopsis for one of his novels. He goes to DS9 and takes command of the Defiant?! :scream: :censored:

Over Sisko and Kira's dead bodies.

^MB says the same thing, so I think you're probably remembering right.

Uhm, I don't think he commandeered the Defiant herself, but a rather a Defiant-class ship. The Monitor, IIRC.

Yes, you're right. Got my books mixed up. I was thinking of Captain's Peril. I just didn't like the idea of him "saving the day" on Bajor.

Its professionally published fan-fiction.

All Trek books are professionally published fan-fiction.

Personally, I've always liked the Shatnerverse novels. They are fun reads, although I find that each new trilogy tends to be weaker than the previous one (note: I am in the middle of Collision Course, so the jury is still out on that yet).
