I don't want to get into a huge debate on whether or not the timeline was erased or if the new timeline exsits in a different reality. We have millions of those debates. I am personally going with the theory that keeps the PRime timeline intact, simply because I want to go with that theory. I'm really big on the idea on personal continuity which means you can add or subtract shows or books if you want.

What I don't understand though is why so many people don't seem to understand why some people might be upset of the Prime trekline being erased. They say you still have the dvd's and but wouldn't the knowledge that it is all going to be erased effect how you enjoy the dvd's? Would it be hard to care about the characters in these shows if you know it won't matter in the end because it will all be erased. Basically your making everything that has happened in the trek universe one huge lie. It would be like one of those episodes such as "Year of Hell" were the characters endure all these things but then a big reset button is pushed. Granted I think some fans are being stubborn in refusing to even accept the theory that we were dealing with a divergent timeline as oposed to a altered timline. The fact that writers even acknowldged this would be a issue is proof to me that didn't want to crap over evrything that came before which to me is yet another good reason to just roll with the idea that we now have two timelines. Still i do understand why people don;t like the idea of everything be erased and i'm not sure why some people don't see this as problem unless they simply didn't have any emotional investment in the characters of the Prime trekverse.

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

Fans don't get upset. Fans are pleased for their franchise. Purists get upset.

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

I really wish there were some other expression; "purists" is complimentary. It should be something neutral.

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

Translated, we in the Netherlands call people like that "antfuckers". But I don't know if that's appropriate. :D

Personally, whenever I watch any movie, the knowledge that they are going to be erased when I turn off the DVD terrifies me. I was watching an episode of LOST the other day, and I realized it would cease to exist when I was done watching it. It kind of ruined it for me. :scream::(

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

Look at it this way:

If the Prime Directive of fandom is "thou shalt not mess with the canon," Captain Kirk just did what he always did: ignored the Prime Directive, changed the rules, and saved the franchise.

Damn the photo torpedoes, warp speed ahead!

Alternate Dimentional theory and it's Mechanics work like this

Subject A can either choose to do action A, or not. He does Action A, Result B,C,D,E,F,G, ect happen, but at the same time he does not do Action A... All points and relativities happen in all realities.... Ergo nothing is erased or destory it's just that we jumped off the TOS Prime Universe and are now following the characters in Universe Beta.

So Theoretically, Nero never came back Robau wasn't a badass and died and Kirk still had a dad therefore Time continued in it's correct frame, but we are seeing a seperate universe where the things in the movie do happen, time is changed and things happen differently. There's a way back to the other universe, but it hasn't been explored yet, or no one on the writing staff cares to explore it.

What I don't understand though is why so many people don't seem to understand why some people might be upset of the Prime trekline being erased.

I simply don't understand how people who don't own something, have no stake in something can get so worked up. I honestly think people like that are lacking something in their life.

I love talking about Trek but it really *is* just a TV show/Film series.

 Yeah...not quite neutral enough...

The whole premise of your argument is false. The "prime trekline" is not erased, this is part of the "prime trekline", the presense of the older Spock makes it part of the "prime trekline". TOS is cannon, and this movie is also part of the same cannon.

This movie is as much a sequel as it is a prequel.

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

I was in another timeline called the sixties and seventies where I experienced a show called Star Trek. Then I found myself forward in time thirty years but in Trek close to a century had passed. Still further along in my primetimeline I was at the turn of the century and Trek was back two centuries!

I'm never gonna see the sixties and seventies again. Relativisticly, I'll never see my future the same way either.

Why should Trek be any different?

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

I don't have a problem with this. In my mind, everything that has been done over the last 43 years is still there.

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

Yeah, the Prime Timeline is still out there. Just because you change the channel from Showtime to HBO with your remote control, doesn't mean that Showtime ceases to exist.

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

I just wish they hadn't blown up Vulcan and killed Amanda. I'm cool with everything else.

Sorry to break the news to you, but life is life and Trek is Trek. That is why Trek could be and is different.

The transporter malfunction that sent Prime universe Kirk, McCoy, Scotty, Uhura to the Mirror Universe in "Mirror Mirror" could just as easily sent them to the Abramsverse, but somehow I doubt the Abrmasverse Enterprise was orbiting Halkan or their Kirk, McCoy, Scotty, Uhura transporting at the very same time the malfunction occurred.

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

Ah but Myths change over the lifetime of the society that spawns then and since our society is still strong and vibrant, Trek can grow more since it is our modern tall tale much like the Stories of John Henry. Or a more modern more messed with Mythos... Superman.

Remember when Superman could only leap tall buidlings, That power grew and then he could fly. And there's been a reboot of Superman in comic books about four times, countless TV shows. Why is Trek more sacred than the Big Blue Boy Scout?

Re: The reason why fans get upset over the prime timeline being erased

There seemed to be a fair number of people who were still holding out for a TNG/DS9 spinoff series or movie. I suppose they have a right to be disappointed, even though it was obviously not happening.

Also the implied message is sorta "TNG was so 1990s and now uncool", perhaps some fans take that personally.
