The re-hiring of McFadden

IIRC, it wouldn't stay up during shooting; her hair plus the lights caused the hairspray and/or gel to simply not work.

They time travelled so much that they should have just brought in Doctor Who.

Yeah, just hire John Pertwee.

That would have made for a fantastic in-joke.

Oh, yes! Then we would've had dialog like "Captain, the only way to save Mr. LaForge's life is to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow!"

Or scenes like:

Picard: The Enterprise is caught in a stellar anomaly that threatens to rip the ship in shreds. Any suggestions?
Doctor: Have you tried reversing the polarity of the neutron flow?
Data: Doctor, that is not possible since...
LaForge: Wait, Data, that might just work!

I'm quite sober, or clean, or whatever the phrase is, and I consider Muldaur a very fine actress, and one who isn't ugly at all - I refer you to, to give an obvious Star Trek example, her two guest spots on the original series. She might have been getting on in years by the time of her TNG role, but, contra Hollywood mantra, old women really exist and may, gosh darn it, be interesting people. ;)

Certainlt a better actress, IMHO, than Denise Crosby. And it would have been easy to give her guest spots later on - a lot easier then the totally absurd plot contrivances thrown around to give Denise some appearances.

^If she'd wanted to appear on the show again.

Having just come out of revisiting 2nd Season on DVD, I have to say that she was a perfectly good actress, but saddled by a poorly-conceived character.

True. But at least it was a concieved character. Beverly Crusher was basically Wesley's Mom and Picard's Potential Love Interest. The development the character underwent later - her interest in theatre and dance, for example - came from Gates herself. Pulaski was moving in the direction of being a more organic character near the end of the season, and I think she would have been pretty good had she stuck around - and arguably a better female counterbalance for the male crew than Crusher or Troi were.

Although I like the character of Crusher, I think that I too prefer Pulaski for basically the same reasons previously stated here. And I think her relationship with Data, disliked by some, had already started to mellow by the end of the 2nd season and could have been a great dynamic later in the series.

I don't care what yall say. Mama Crusher is hot. I'd do her in a heartbeat.

As long as the kid ain't around. :p

That's the spirit, laddie!

Well, actually, no. "Mama Crusher is hot" ONLY? You get 25% for your effort. :p

This statement isn't exactly incompatible with the belief that Pulaski was the better character, now is it? ;)

Ooh! Ooh! Professor! *Waves hand in the air.*

She's also gorgeous, sexy and smart. I know this are true, because of my learnings.

I liked Pulaski and thought she brought something great to the mix, but I also find that there's definitely something missing in the chemistry of the show's ensemble in S2 (mind you, it's not the best of seasons anyway, for other reasons, which might have had an impact.)

It's a pity we couldn't have had both Beverly and Pulaski in some other capacity. The show needed more strong women, and I'd have loved to have seen the two of them interact. It would have been awesome.

I chalk up most of its problems to the Writer's Strike. It would have been a much better season - perhaps one of TNG's best - without that.

That would have been interesting. :)

Now, on to your last set of remarks (and I do agree, mind you). There should have been an attempt to make Troi a "diplomatic officer" during this season (instead of the relaunch). "He's lying" and "He's hiding something" are lines more appropriate for dealing with aliens-of-the-week or with foreign interstellar powers, not with other Federation citizens.

Perhaps Pulaski should've been a "grumpy" bartender, a la Moe Szyslak. I can see the interaction between her and Data when the latter steps into Ten Forward and orders a drink. Guinan then could've been the "ship's counsellor."

Season two of TNG was my favorite because of Pulaski. Everyone else (with a few exceptions here and there) almost always agreed and got along with each other and then in comes the new doctor, combative and cranky. I was taken aback, but I took to her immediately.

Unfortunately, with the "everyone must get along, there must be no conflict in the 24th century" mentality that severely crippled TNG, Pulaski would have done better on DS9 where most of the characters were sniping at each other as they felt their way around.

Even in the first few episodes of TNG season one, I never believed the premise that this was a new ship and a new crew that really hadn't worked together before. With DS9, I believed it. Too bad they couldn't have hired Muldaur in some capacity for DS9. She would've fit right in with that group.

The thing is, to enjoy TNG, you had to buy into the conceit that the people in this setting really acted like that...so attempts to bring character conflict by introducing one character who didn't fit in seemed very forced and artificial. I'm in a minority of TNG fans who didn't like Ensign Ro. I think that of the two, Pulaski worked better...if only they'd toned down the anti-Data bigotry early on, and dumped the aversion to transporters altogether. Then one might be able to call her evocative of McCoy's spirit, rather than a blatant, insulting rip-off.

and here was me thinking i was in such a small minority on several issues raised in this thread...

yes, gates mcfadden was/is hot. especially in the later seasons.
yes, pulaski >>>> crusher in terms of character. by a long way imo. pulaski just infinitely more interesting.
and yes, the whole pulaski bigotry thing towards data is ridiculously overstated by her detractors.

just finished watching S2, and started S3 for the first time in years. was a little disappointed when crusher lobbed back up.
