The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as producer

Roddenberry Productions has put out the following press release announcing that The Questor Tapes is going into development with Imagine Television:

CEO of Roddenberry Productions Rod Roddenberry announced today that Roddenberry Productions has entered into a deal with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Television to develop the Gene Roddenberry pilot “The Questor Tapes.” The announcement was made at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame induction ceremony where Rod Roddenberry accepted the posthumous honor, presented by Seth MacFarlane, on his father’s behalf.

“The Questor Tapes” was originally conceived as a television series pilot about an android with incomplete memory tapes who searches for his creator and his purpose. The pilot ultimately aired as a 1974 television movie. (The Questor character became the inspiration for Data, one of the most compelling characters in Star Trek: The Next Generation.)

“My father always felt that Questor was the one that got away,” said Rod Roddenberry. “He believed that the show had the potential to be bigger than Star Trek.”

Rod Roddenberry will develop project along with Roddenberry Productions COO Trevor Roth and Imagine Television’s President David Nevins and EVP of Development Robin Gurney. Team is currently in negotiations with writer, producer and show runner Tim Minear (Lois & Clark, The X-Files, Angel, Dollhouse) to produce.

Re: The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as prod

They're going to have to change the name, first thing.

"The Question Flash Memory"

or

"The Questor Disk"

Because nobody uses tapes anymore. :)

Re: The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as prod

Awesome news! Even more awesome is that it's Imagine producing and not Tribune!

Re: The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as prod

"The Questor DVD"

No, no. "The Questor Blu-Ray"

"The Questor TiVo"

Or how about just something that covers it basically: "The Questor Recordings"

Re: The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as prod

"Questor" will do fine.

In fact, that would've been the name of the original if it had gone to series. The Questor Tapes was the name given to the pilot film specifically.

Although as a matter of fact, magnetic tape is still used for computer data storage in some contexts, mainly as backups and archives.

Re: The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as prod

I'd like to see this. As for the name- The Questor Hard Drive Files ?

The Questor CD-Rom Files ?

or how about

Questor: Where the Hell Are My Memories? :)

Re: The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as prod

Hope it's not at Fox

Re: The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as prod

I thought Tim Minear was supposed to be busy with an Alien Nation remake?

Although this could be pretty interesting. Though I've never seen the original pilot, the idea holds a lot of promise.

Re: The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as prod

Big question is, will we get a Robert Foxworth appearance?

Appropriately he should play the role (the original android) that Lew Ayers did in the original....

Re: The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as prod

definitely interested! Data is my fave ST character! :D

I just hope he's actually mechanical and not some fleshy construct ala Cylons.

Re: The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as prod

I've got a copy of the original Questor script around somewhere. It's not bad. Modernize it and work on a couple of the plot holes, and it should be ready to go.

I could probably rework in over a weekend.

I do hope there's no hatchet jobbery involved, indeed. Earth: Final Conflict and Andromeda haven't set a good precedent for "Roddenberry" TV shows in staring strong and then collapsing disastorously.

There's real potential here for a pretty okay TV series, so I hope they do it justice and so on. Tim Minear's credentials look decent (well decent enough - Lois & Clark? a lot of sitting in Whedon's shadow also, if one were to count Firefly) so there are possibilities.

I think The Questor Files keeps the tone of the original as well as being timeless. They could use some generic medium to hold the software, something that could represent anything similar to the colored squares on TOS Trek.

Data was originally meant to be partly organic or pseudo-organic (see "The Naked Now"). And the cutting edge of cybernetics and AI research today involves a lot of blurring of the line between the organic and the mechanical, with DNA-based nanotech, neurochips, and so on.

Re: The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as prod

^^^^
Also, in one of the earlier versions of the TNG Writer's Guide, Data is said to have been the creation of an unknown alien race. I think this would have been much more interesting than what we got for Data's background in the actual series as it aired.

As far as Questor: I have fond memories of the original, but haven't seen it in over 30 years. It'd be fun if they had Robert foxworth do a cameo as Dr. Vaslovik in the new version.

Re: The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as prod

If they keep the Jerry Robinson character, will it be changed to a woman named Jeri Robinson, and have sexual tension between her and the android Questor?

Since Roddenberry told Questor's story (an android searching for it's humanity) through Data, is there anything else left to say?

Questor's purpose wasn't just about that. By the end of the movie, he'd adopted a mission much like Gary Seven's in "Assignment: Earth" -- using advanced alien technology to monitor the world and shepherd it through its time of crisis, protecting us from ourselves until we reach maturity.

And in the movie per se, he wasn't so much searching for humanity as searching for his origins and purpose (though he definitely had to learn about humanity in order to manage in the world). He found those answers by the end of the film, but in a remake, perhaps the mystery of his origins and purpose could be stretched out more. I could see it being made ambivalent: was he created for good or evil purposes?

I know but I mean those types of robots that are ridiculously indistinguishable from humans, like they eat, sleep, father children with humans etc...

Re: The Questor Tapes in development, possibly with Tim Minear as prod

Why shouldn't an android eat? There are real-life robots being designed today that are able to extract energy from the "digestion" of organic matter. And why not? It's a proven and effective method for generating energy. And why shouldn't an android sleep? Every machine needs downtime to minimize wear and tear. (And those electric sheep aren't gonna dream themselves, you know.)
