Marvel announced at Comic-Con that the rights to The Punisher are theirs again and they're going to try to restart a franchise. Who do you think could play the role of Frank Castle? And why do you think this property has failed time and time again as a feature film?

I don't think they ever got the character right. And the casting hasn't been all that great.

I agree with Jack Bauer...they ramped up the violence level in War Zone and tried to do some things that "Punisher" with Thomas Jane couldn't or didn't do. I think they need to give the script to Warren Ellis and tell him to have at it. I'm glad they purchased the rights back. They need to do so for Daredevil and Fantastic Four as well.

i actually liked the Tom Jane one. it wasn't brillaint, but it was still pretty damn good.

i heard War Zone stank though and i've never bothered seeing it.

Punisher suffered from people who didn't understand the comic itself.

I haven't seen the Lundgren one (don't plan to) but the Thomas Jane movie lacked the violence and had just a plain dumb story on top of unfitting actors (Jane is too "small" and i just don't believe Travolta as a bad guy).

Ray Stevenson was pitch perfect physically as The Punisher but his movie was just all gore and violence without any substance.

Producers need to find a middle ground.. an engaging story and good casting on top of incredible violence. Just take a story from Ennis' run on The Punisher and rework it for a movie... it would be perfect.

"War Zone" wasn't amazing but it was definitely the most faithful adaptation. I can't believe they'd be working on one just three years after the previous one bombed though! Give it some time, man.

^^^ I would imagine that if it's Marvel made, then the chances are good that it will (at best) "not contradict" the Marvel movie universe. He's too different of a character to really fit in with the other superheroes though.

^ What he said. There's a definition of insanity which is basically along the lines of trying the same thing time and time again and expecting different results. This certainly seems to fit the bill.

I think Punny is a character who works better in comics because he is - or at least was - unique in that genre. He was invented as Marvel's answer to Death Wish and all those sort of 70s movies. But that kind of character has been ten a penny ever since in the cinema. Another guy with a big gun out for revenge. Yawn. Give it up guys.

I'm much more interested in seeing DD and FF reboots.

I haven't really read any comics in a while but I was in a comic shop a couple of weeks ago and it looks like the Punisher has been revived as a Frakenstein's Monster(?). Now that's a storyline they should pursue for this movie.

The second Punisher (the Tom Jane and Travolta one) was damn good. I haven't seen the first movie, but I did see the 3rd one, War Zone, and damn was it awful.
