The Prophets and Different Histories

Emperor Norton

In DS9 and in Star Trek in general, there have been episodes where we see an alternate history or a parallel universe. The Mirror Universe is not the matter at hand here. It is realities like the ones Worf visited in "Parallels" from TNG, or the DS9 episode "The Visitor". Indeed, the loss of Sisko in the timeline of "The Visitor" totally throws their prophecy into disarray. Though perhaps, depending on your interpretation of the multiverse, the history was inevitably destined to be corrected. Based on that, how do the Prophets react to such changes in history? From what I can infer of the series, there is one series of events that is destined to play out, culminating in "What You Leave Behind". However, are the Prophets perhaps at a loss to fully guide history? There are examples where they seem to be. The Reckoning was prevented by Kai Winn intervening, and the reaction of the Prophets seems to be one of being totally at a loss for how that happened, and it being unexpected. A number of times, the Prophets warn Sisko that he has gone off their path or not to go off the path, such as Sisko's marriage. However, there is free will in that Sisko does marry against their advice, and free will means an uncertain history. Or do the Prophets think there is a set course for things that will be, even if they do not happen as planned? Are the Prophets themselves then at a loss, and not omnipotent.

What happens if the prophets were destroyed or at least damaged by chroniton radiation?

To me they seem not as gods but advanced aliens that exist outside the normal structures of the universe.

That's exactly what they are. They are gods to the ancient Bajorans, but Starfleet people know them as alien beings that live in the wormhole

No, they don't understand time as a distinct sequence of events. You must dispense with the Neo-Platonic notions of theology in order to start to understand that.

But they understand all existence and history as a finite "now". Everything that happened is happening and will happen. But this is a deviation from that if what has, is and will happen is different.

Not necessarily. In Emissary, they claim that there exists no difference between past, present and future, but it is not clear that they experience all simultaneously. Indeed, they keep asking Sisko why he "exists here"--why he is stuck in one temporal point. It suggests that the Prophets can move between temporal points, but do not inhabit them all.

More importantly, there is no evidence that they are omnipresent. Indeed, they seem to lack knowledge of things the farther away from the Wormhole that they take place. Their knowledge of Bajoran history itself seems imperfect, and it is Sisko himself who must lay down the stakes for future occupation of Bajor in Sacrifice of Angels. Going back to Emissary, they cannot know who the Emissary is until he is before them, occupying the same space as them. Their knowledge of history, in general, is hazy and very circumscribed as a result.

If the profits did not know what time was up until the pilot aired, why is there an orb of time?

Good point, and the existence of Sarah too.

I chalk it up to the producers and writers not thinking far end and forgetting what the Prophets said to Sisko in Emissary, years down the road.

I tend to ignore things like this so I can enjoy trek.
