The Prometheus

Just watched an episode of DS9 season 1 last night on Virgin 1, it was the episode where they reignite a dead star, well anyway the Nebula class ship they used was called the promethues so we can safely assume that that Nebula class ship and the crew we saw on it got destroyed during the Dominion war since they built a new Prometheus.

Just thought i'd share that bit of useful information.

Hey, maybe it just got damaged and then retired and everyone came out okay. :)

The one thing that bothered me about the Prometheus was the large crew compliment. Odo grimly asserts to Sisko that aside from Seyatik, nobody has left the Prometheus, so that woman there can't be Fenna... or can she?

Uh, it's a big starship with a reasonable degree of crew. Am I expected to believe none of them went on Terok Nor to try their luck at the dabo wheel or sample Quark's holosuites? What kind of working stiffs are these guys?

Also, anyone notice the lack of senior staff on that ship? After Seyatik, everyone seems content to take orders from Sisko. What gives?

^ The Prometheus (when written) was supposed to be a smaller ship than a Nebula according to the Companion and commanded by a Lieutenant Commander (the cosuming people messed up though and only made him a Lieutenant). It was fully intended that Sisko would be the most senior officer aboard the ship (and some scripts indicated that Seyetek was the CO of the Prometheus at one point). But that's why everyone was so low in rank. And, about disembarking, if you're ordered to remain on the ship and you try to leave that's a very BAD idea. The Prometheus crew may have been ordered to remain aboard the ship. We have seen that happen with other vessels on DS9.

There's no reason to order them to remain onboard, though. And Seyatik got to have a good time, why can't they?

^ Because, as I said, it was meant originally that Seyatek was Captain of the Prometheus so he got the option of leaving. It's possible they were all busy working on the planning for the star and weren't able to leave. Maybe the Captain was just having an off day and ordered them all to stay aboard.

I think the night before the ship got to DS9 the crew had a huge party that got out of hand and they trashed the ship. As punishment, they were forbidden to leave the ship while at DS9.

...Of course, if Seyetlik really was the CO, I can just imagine the sort of working environment aboard. Knowing the terraformer, it's no wonder the Chief Medical Officer refused to even look at him or his wife, or that the First Officer never dined together with her captain, or that the entire engineering staff was on strike so that O'Brien had to do all the work.

With the change of the Prometheus from a tiny boat commanded by Sisko's inferior to a gigantic floating city still commanded by Sisko's inferior, the writers missed out on several story possibilities. The original idea of Sisko outranking everybody was so ho-hum; why not have him instead struggle against the inertia of a bridge crew of superior rank and of deep loyalty to Seyetlik? It would have been interesting so see Captain Stubbarn flat out refuse to engage a tractor beam, and tell Commander Loyell to put Sisko in irons for even suggesting such a thing.

I get the feeling that the Prometheus is supposed to be a much smaller ship even during filming. Maybe they made the decision to use the Nebula class relatively late in production...

I do wonder why the Oberth class model wasn't used. It was of "movie level" in terms of detail, lighting, overall filmability... It had already been filmed in conjunction with the DS9 model in "Emissary", too. Sure, from the script standpoint, it lacked an obvious shuttlebay - but then again, the model they ended up using did not exactly flaunt her hangar facilities, either.

I'm glad they used the Nebula class. The episode offered the most magnificent FX of the Nebula (one of my faves) to date.

I love the Nebula design.

But this episode showed why the Emissary needed a stable girlfriend. It just wouldn't have worked for him to fall in love with someone new every few weeks.
