For years I've been curious to see the infamous "Phantom Edit" of Episode I. (And I've also heard that there's a fan edit of Ep. II, as well.) Since Lucasfilm has apparently never shown any interest in filing suit against the fellow who created it, would it be legal for a fan to acquire a copy, as long as no money changed hands? I'm certainly not interested in infringing on anyone's copyright; I own the official version of the movie, but I'm curious to see what a different edit would look like.

Still haven't gotten around to the Phantom Edit.
However, Andywan's redo of the original Star Wars is simply phenomenal. He actually adds about 15 mins of new content that integrates seamlessly into the original. My favorites are the expansion of the Darth Vader/Obi Wan lightsaber duel and the dogfight above the death star. He also cleans up a lot of nagging little details and reverts the Han Solo vs Greedo scene to the way it should have been. And he includes the music that ties the overal series together - for example the original didn't have Duel of the Fates in it, though it was thematically approrpriate for the ongoing Obi-Wan/Darth Vader conflict, and it didn't even have the Imperial March, which wasn't created until ESB!
Recommend it very highly. Honestly, I think it's better than the Special Edition.

It's not just the extra content that is great. Every frame has been color corrected, sfx have been altered, some scenes are edited differently. It is absolutely amazing that someone on their home PC could accomplish what Lucasfilm could not. I grabbed the dvd 9 version and it has full menus text commentary, deleted scenes and hidden extras. Everything about it screams quality and effort. It has replaced the Special Edition in my DVD collection and i cannot wait until he finishes ESB.

Agreed, Adywan's SW Revisited is phenomenal. I felt that this was what GL meant to do with the SE.

I know it's a large download but i do highly suggest the DVD-9 version. It is the only one that has the full menus and extras. It WILL replace the dvd copy of the Special Edition that you obviously already own since you are thinking of downloading this...

To answer the original question, yes, it's illegal, even if no money changes hands. I can only speak about U.S. law, but I'm an intellectual property attorney in the U.S. and money is irrelevant when it comes to copyright infringement. In fact, unlike patent or trademark infringement, copyright infringement is both a civil and a criminal offense, so the people posting these edits without permission (and the people who are downloading them) are not only at risk of being sued, but could also be arrested. I'm not making any judgments on this stuff, since I've been "around" when it comes to the many joys the internet provides, I'm just stating the facts about the various risks involved.

Wow, never heard of that but I got it and it really is pheonomenal! I'm finding a whole world of interesting fan edits out there. What's interesting is I don't find it so much that it's like so-and-so sucks this is better but rather it gives a way to really appreciate what guys like GL did in a new light.
I'm not sure about the legality of fan edits and such, but most (if not all) people who do these things urge that you buy or already own the original work before you download the fan edit.
At least then you are complying with the spirit of the law, which is that the artist is paid for their work. With all the money I've dropped on licensed SW stuff over the years, I don't feel like watching some guy's fan edit of a movie is stealing from teh mouth of Lucasfilm- especially when I own every version of the movies except the ones that came out on laserdisc.

While I think it's cool that someone went in to clean up FX and such, the idea of re-editing scenes and replacing music cues sounds stupid and crosses an ethical line in my book.
Warts and all, I prefer the original versions, not this fan wank bullshit.
If you don't like Phantom Menace (and I'm not trying to defend it) don't watch it.
I've done my share of fan edits. It's really about more than just the "I think I can do better" mentality. It's about taking something you love and putting your own stamp on it. It's about learning about the flow of a story and thinking about the possibilities, the different ways it can go, and seeing what happens. And it's about fun. It can be a lot of work, and it can be frustrating, but to burn a DVD after days or weeks or even months of work and sitting back to watch a new version of something familiar that YOU'VE CREATED can be immensely satisfying.
I've done fan edits of "The Best of Both Worlds" and DS9's occupation arc and SG-1's "Lost City" and it was great fun to make them and to watch them. To say that a fan edit disrespects the original isn't entirely true. I won't deny that there's that aspect to it - especially when it comes to something that hasn't been terribly well-received - but that's not ALL there is to it.
Star Wars won the Oscar for editing and FX which Lucas (who was not credited with either) changed for the Special Editions. I find it interesting that most people's indignation starts and ends with who has the legal right to do something and not whether the act itself is actually right or not.
Bah, I can't get Revisited working. I mean, I got the .iso loaded int my DVD player, but it didn't play steadily; lots of jerking. And that was without the VIDEO_TS fixes. So, thinking that was all I needed, I did a whole thing where I copied the .iso contents to a hard drive, dropped in the new VIDEO_TS files, and then created a new .iso. And now DVD Player is telling me there's no supported disc present.
If they can't be bothered to put up an already-corrected .iso file, I can't be bothered watching it.
