Fellows, I hear what you're saying about Moby Dick, so just call me Don Quixote. This is my windmill, my white whale! -- RR

Never read Moby-Dick other than in excerpts, but from his similarly themed novellas Billy Budd and Benito Cereno, I agree that his prose is twice as long (at least) as it ought to be. I think Melville's best work--like Bartleby--lies outside of his nautical fiction.

Creditorly yours, the Rent Woman

My sister read it ages ago and actually said pretty much the same thing have. As for myself, after hearing how much my sister hated it, I never even bothered trying, and now I'm even more sure I made the right decision.

I really enjoyed Billy Budd, but Moby-Dick did not do it for me. Queequeg was awesome, though.

Moby Dick has been an incredibly useful book for me. A number of years ago I went through a spell where I was having difficulty sleeping. I considered asking my doctor for something to help until during one such evening I picked up Moby Dick. Three pages later, I was out. It remained by my bed for years. I finally did finish it, three pages at a time.

^ Geez, I just use books from DRG3's oeuvre. I mean, the sheer thickness alone makes for a handy boot to the head.

^ True. My longest work to date would probably qualify as a chapter in one of DRGIII's books....one of the chapters he cuts during revisions.
