This one was on tv recently. I hadn't seen it in awhile. So, when Riker says "I'll be in holodeck 4," are we to understand that he got all horny from that metamorph chick and he's about to go have sex with a holographic version of her? If so, why did he feel the need to call the bridge and tell them about it?

That was what I understood from it. Or, rather, I got the impression he was going to . . . never mind. Sounds too dirty to type. Let's just say I assumed he was going to get some relief somehow. And it still makes me laugh.

As for calling the bridge, it seems to me that he was only letting them know where he could be reached in case of emergency. He didn't give an exact description of who or what he'd be doing in there.

you know what i always wondered about "those situations" (re: people doing it with holographs)? as far as i could tell, there was no way to "lock" the door of a holodeck, and quite often you see people just "popping in" to other people's holodeck programs. why on earth would you run any kind of program that would be awkward for someone to walk in on (re: riker in the episode you're talking about, barclay in his recreation of crew members, geordi when he gets all lovey with the engineer holograph). i mean, it's just an awkward situation waiting to happen imo.

I believe this was the only Star Trek episode to reference wanking until Rom mentioned having Umox (or however you spell that sexual Ferengi ear thing) by himself and as far as I know, there haven't been any other references since.

Regarding the holodeck doors, I imagine there's an option to enter a security code to prevent others from intruding on one's program. I assume Barclay never bothered because he was too wrapped up in what he was doing to think about the necessity of such caution, but I imagine Riker would be more careful.

They can't always leave the door unlocked. What about people on dates? I'm sure Worf and Troi in "All Good Things..." and Geordi in "Booby Trap" made sure no one would disturb them during their beach dates.

there's probably an option, but you always see people running around overriding security codes to private quarters, im sure they can override security codes to the holodeck. i mean crap, even deanna "what's a containment breach" troi knows how to override a security code plus no one seems particularly worried about walking in on other people's stuff, not to mention the crazy crap that happens in the holodeck all the time when they have to go in and look at programming. uck, or when the enterprise was reproducing that thing and parts of different programs were melding on the orient express holograph?

"what's this, riker? doing it with aliens again, i see". weird.

i would not be surprised if the crew members regularly got..shall we say "action" in the holodeck.

Quark's holosuites in DS9 were essentially electronic brothels, so since the technology is the same, why not on the Enterprise-D? lol.

The only issue would be using somebody else's image though. Thinking somebody like Deanna is hot, and she somehow finds a program in which a holographic version of her is doing it with a male crewmember wouldn't go down to well.

Yes, and this issue was dealt with on the episode of DS9 (forgot the name) where Jeffrey Combs plays an alien who wants to nail a holographic Kira, and in "Galaxy's Child" where Leah Brahms suspects that Geordi's been making sweet holodeck love with her holographic counterpart. Both good examples of people being really sloppy with keeping their holodeck business/intentions private.

Seeing as how everyone thinks Quark is scum in the early seasons of DS9 for having such programs, I seriously doubt the crew of the Enterprise-D would even entertain the idea of using a holodeck for such things. I would, but then I'm not a moral superman.

Seeing as how everyone thinks Quark is scum in the early seasons of DS9 for having such programs, I seriously doubt the crew of the Enterprise-D would even entertain the idea of using a holodeck for such things. I would, but then I'm not a moral superman.

Riker would have. As for Picard? He finds more fun in the depths of a good book, sitting alone...listening to the snow fall and watching the 24th century version of QVC and wearing his snuggie.

Sex in a holosuit? Doesn't compute with him..

Presumably you'd see that it was in use and respect that person's privacy, just like you would if someone was in the bathroom. On the other hand, though, you wouldn't have to be doing it right out in the open. You could go in to Dixon Hill's office, for example, and lock that door.
