The Painting (spoilers)

How did the three Doctors get out of the painting? Could they trap themselves for a pre-arranged moment in time then eject themselves at the right moment? And they were fairly deep in the painting; did they push the Dalek out of the 'frame' and just managed to exit through the boundary, which obviously led them out the front.

The other thing is if they could do that, why not track down a painting of Gallifrey and evacuate the planet that way?? At the very least get the people of Arcadia out of the 'Gallifrey Falls No More' painting and leave the Daleks behind.

Or is there more timey whimey bollocks involved that I'm missing? :)

Timlords see time and feel time and they probably do not like having their time stolen from them just like we don't like having our kidneys taken from us. It's probably that given the choice of having a sliver of them trapped in a painting for half a million years, or they had an intrinsic counter measure that just says "fuck off".

Remember Romana II talking about Computer Paintings in City of Death?

The Zygons were able to get out of the painting they were in somehow. I guess there was a time limit and they were able to emerge at the moment they needed to.

Also I don't think the painting is actually Gallifrey itself, just a Gallifreyian painting. Gallifrey itself is still out there, the painting is just proof that it still exists. Maybe at some point the Doctor does find Gallifrey and then takes the painting back.
