THE ORVILLE S2, E8: "IDENTITY, PART I"

Great episode, but it seems premature. This should have been the pinnacle of a lot more build up and stories. This should be a few seasons later. This scares me that they have to fit all of their ideas in now, because they are not getting more seasons.

I've got to say, that boneyard was way beyond anything I expect from this kind of TV show. Very T2.

Well, they are basically Skynet and a planet of terminators, who destroyed their creators, then setting sights into space..... all of the weaponry had a Terminator vibe to me, actually.

It makes sense though - if they were a species of robots that had created themselves, they would be more like computer programs that could download into any droid. I even made a Cybertron/Transformers joke when they got there - like I wonder what form the other Kaylons were going to take? I thought Isaac's form was for the crews comfort and benefit only. This origin completely explains why they were ever humanoid.

Major TMP vibes with the scan and the wondrous music as they explore the world.

When they were first entering, I said out loud, is this V'ger's machine planet??

I had been underwhelmed by the second season so far. But this one was great. Good script from Trek alumni Brannon & Andre.

Is Isaac the only Kalon with blue eyes?

In the Isaac goodbye party poor Dann wanted to say something but didn't get a chance.

Norm Mcdonald was in the credits but I didn't see yaphit. He must have been part of the Isaac goodbye party.

This was a good TV night for me. Loved the Discovery episode too, and also liked TBBT Shatner episode.

Shatner is so amazing. Beyond amazing. That voice..... needs to be voicing an animated Captain Kirk. I would never, ever believe his age if I didn't know better.

I wonder why the planetary Kaylons had any eyes at all. We learned during the Mr Potatohead incident that his eyes were non functional decorations just to give Humans something to look at when interacting with him...

Well that is the truth - it is how and why their creators made them with eyes.

Damn, this episode took a turn! No wonder it's a two-parter! Next, I bet Isaac will realize that because he's spent more time with humans while the rest of the Kaylons have stayed on their home planet, that he isn't like them at all. But anyway, this is why I watch The Orville. Awesome stuff

Btw, at the party, I don't know if anyone caught this, but Isaac's speech was Sally Field's Oscar acceptance speech from 1984. Interesting detail seeing as Mercer told Isaac to scan his databanks for speeches. And nice for the episode to air just before the Oscars air! Coincidence?

Haha. I love that speech, if only because of how many morons on the internet insist that it has changed, and that her speech used to be "you like me, you really really like me!" according to the mandela-effect crowd.... lmfao.

For me, the Metropolis reference when they landed spoiled part of the surprise early on: there was going to be something shocking underground. Still enjoyed the episode though.

I had a quick image mentally of Khan and his crew taking the Reliant's stations when the AI's took over the Orville bridge.

That's unfortunate they did not catch the camera mistake where they scan the entire bridge and then cut back to Gordon saying he hopes it doesn't cause cancer as he's being scanned after they show the scanner going over him already.

Yeah but I literally noticed it on my first time watching it. I'm surprised someone didn't catch it. The episode reminds me of a blend between Voyager episode "Prototype" and TNG episode "Best of Both Worlds". Pretty good otherwise.

Oh, nothing that Trek fans do is really surprising - is it?

I would not like a total reset that involves time travel that undoes everything or a reset where it was all a simulation. I hope that whatever resolution they come up with to stop the attack on Earth and to keep Isaac as part of the crew does leave some scars and some consequences. I would love to see the crew mourn the crew members that were lost. I would also love to see the Union make some changes as a result of how close they came to being wiped out. I would also love to see the crew take it a bit slow to take back Isaac as a member of the crew. I also don't want to see Isaac and Claire instantly go back to a relationship as if nothing happened.

At the risk of adding to Dennis’ disdain for Trek comparisons, you’ve effectively described everything VOY failed to avoid, thereby making it less fulfilling than it could have been. One can hope this show won’t make the same errors.

The most unexpected twist would be that Isaac is still on Kaylon, still deactivated.

The easiest out for Isaac is that the Kaylons deactivated him because they knew he wasn't going to be onboard for their master plan, and this Isaac is a reboot or an impostor.

You can't just having him playing along until he finds an opening to help his crew and be okay with it after everyone that died.

The primary unit did say Isaac would be disassembled, and then used for parts.

Didn't they also say he was built for the "eemissary" mission?
