THE ORVILLE S2, E8: "IDENTITY, PART I"

Any chance that when the Kaylons invade Earth, the Union fleet kicks their ass because based on Isaac's notes, they just assumed every ship would be like the middle-of-the-road Orville?

Damn, this episode took a turn! No wonder it's a two-parter! Next, I bet Isaac will realize that because he's spent more time with humans while the rest of the Kaylons have stayed on their home planet, that he isn't like them at all. But anyway, this is why I watch The Orville. Awesome stuff :)

Btw, at the party, I don't know if anyone caught this, but Isaac's speech was Sally Field's Oscar acceptance speech from 1984. Interesting detail seeing as Mercer told Isaac to scan his databanks for speeches. :D And nice for the episode to air just before the Oscars air! Coincidence?

Yeah I caught that as well..........lol

Remember, when the WizKids merch was announced last week, they named every main team member (including Alara!) except Isaac. A hint that he will be in the enemys expansion pack?

After the failed Thanagarian Invasion in Justice League (Animated) Hawkgirl stopped wearing her Thanagarian military uniform.

Issac could build himself a new body, even an organic body.

I hope that the outcome of this story isn't that Isaac henceforward will look like the actor who plays him. He's a nice-looking guy and everything, but I love the Isaac design and that would just make him another Data.

I know. Issac would secretly upload the porn virus to the entire Kaylon civilization...

I think that possibility has been brought up.

If the title "Identity" means anything* it probably has to do with what makes Isaac the individual that he is.

*And I guess we'll see, one way or the other, huh?

^Speaking of origins, I was struck by a thought yesterday.

Anybody ever read "Life, The Universe and Everything" by Douglas Adams? In it is a passage about the people of Krikkit, who launched a rocket through the clouds that isolated them and discovered that the universe was much larger than they ever realized...and upon that realization, their inherent isolationism drove them to decide to eliminate everything else, creating a race of robots to do the killing. (Adams put it thusly: they set about destroying everything in the universe that wasn't Krikkit. :D)

I got to thinking that the original organic Kaylons pierced the clouds covering their own planet and had a similar epiphany, so they made the first batch of androids, and in the ultimate example of not thinking things through, the organic Kaylon leaders ordered the androids to go forth and destroy all life in the universe...and the androids said "Very Well" and started with them.

Yeah, I know, but t's just the way my mind works.

This episode was not what I was expecting. I figured it would be the old story where the only way to save Isaac would be to do a complete re-boot of his systems, resulting in a total memory loss and the crew (esp. Cassidy Yates) reacting to this "new" Isaac. Basically, it would be the show's way of safely getting Isaac out of his relationship status.

Obviously, I was wrong, and I'm happy about that. I don't like new television that is too predictable.

The music cues where they approach the planet sound very similar to a Star Trek episode, but I can't place it.
When the Orville was flying into the city, I was also reminded of James Horner's score as the dropship circled the colony on LV-426 in Aliens. Ominous sounding with a periodic soft trumpet(?) blaring sound.

Here's a detail about the end of last night's show: we don't know where Ty and Marcus are.

We see them hiding behind the furniture in their quarters when a couple of Kaylons come in to search, but we don't see them captured.

We see Klyden and Topa captured.

We see Claire captive on the command deck, without her sons.

This kind of editorial elision is rarely accidental.

In the preview for next week there is a shot of Claire and Ty together.
Hmmm, interesting point, maybe it will be his connection with the kids that turn Isaac against the rest of the Kaylon. They could end up getting caught and are about to be killed when Isaac shows up, saves them, then takes them to Claire, and helps the Orville crew defeat the rest of the Kaylons. That would be a good way for him to quickly earn back their trust.

I wouldn't totally rule that out yet, I could see that ending up being how Isaac sticks around.

Here's what happens...

Isaac commits genocide and permanently de-activates his entire race. It could go a couple of ways after that:

* He "de-activates" with them after a sad goodbye
* He is the sole survivor (by design) and future episodes deal with the crew's mixed feelings of appreciation for saving Earth while contemplating just what type of monster would wipe out its entire civilization.

^or Issac just reboots them to a state where the robots were completely obedient to the organic Kaylon folks...?

Billions of robots standing around across the planet waiting for orders from their builders...
