THE ORVILLE S2, E4: "NOTHING LEFT ON EARTH EXCEPTING FISHES"

By the way...

I don’t read every Orville thread so I don’t know if this has been mentioned.

But does anyone think Krill are supposed to be...American? With the whole manifest destiny exceptionalism thing.
No, it's definitely more a 'Radical Islam' type analogy (FYI - Worldwide Islam does have the most followers and the wildly radical fringe sees any non-believer who doesn't follow the teachings of the Koran as an infidel who's going to Hell.)

But hey, Christianity has it's share of nutjob fringe folk as well.

Star Trek had problems predicting future technology, just take the stacks of PADDs for example. Even First Contact thought that in the 2060s music would be stored on transparent hexagonal discs as opposed to digitally.

:lol::lol: And as much as I love classic TOS, please don't tell me about the technology of its computers and its gadgetry :hugegrin:.

Once again, chain of custody issues. The information on the PADD is Chief Engineer's Eyes only until La Forge has seen it. Only then does it get uploaded to a terminal in engineering. Probably by La Forge. Remember how the Internet works. All the information on the main computer is in the ship's 'cloud'. All anyone needs to do is break the encryption to see it, and that violates the custody protocol. So it stays on the PADD until the intended recipient sees it first.
Okay, even if we entertain this idea, why are they lugging PADDs around with the information as opposed to a disc or something equivalent? This would be like someone today delivering an iPad or tablet or even a laptop to someone as opposed to a USB port.
Do you want just anybody to have access to your private e-mails? So they get distributed on PADDs.
Which Neelix was reading anyway.

This was covered at length in the discussion for the Krill episode in season 1.
A character secretly being a spy is an old trope, nuBSG even had it as a major part of their premise before both Disco and Orville.
True, but in the case of Disco and Orville, the spies have the same last name and the same rank.

What, you don't believe that in 250 years our computers will talk in stilted and obviously mechanical voices?

Works for me. Let it be canon from here on out.
It also explains the sexism like how women can’t be captains. They were being ironic and Janice Lester didn’t watch the show so she assumed they were serious. This nearly lead to tragedy because humanity in the 23rd is incapable of dropping a bit no matter how absurd.

But fans thought it must be a deliberate stab onto Discovery in the "We can do this storyline better than you" and this simply isn't true. He also explained on Twitter why the name was changed last minute to Tyler, the legal team just hadn't given permission for the first name they thought of her.

A lot of fans are delusional.

Do we know for sure that Esophagus Guy's trunk is attached? Maybe he just has a second mouth to go with his second esophagus and that it's just manners to keep your trunk tucked in in public.

Nope, they're supposed to be exactly what they are-- religious fanatics who believe only the god's chosen people have souls.

All things considered, that seems unlikely.

No one involved with this show seems previously to have had a thing to say about STD. Presumably they know it's on, but they don't seem to feel a need to compete.

That being said, "we can do the undercover alien thing better than STD" would be a bar they could just sort of step over.

It’s pretty common for fanatics to dehumanize those they hate, at least in human societies. Makes it easier to justify limiting their freedoms and in some cases exterminating them. They just do the same for all other species, like if Daleks had a church.

Best yet but still some under cooked parts.
Someone else mentioned that this felt like a stealth premier of season two and I agree.

The Good:
Gordon with the doctor. "This is a hostile work environment!"
Kelly, large and in charge. She was a good, competent commander.
Bortus "It will end in failure."
Tyler as Tyler was a little bland but as Teleya she was great.
Seth's speech about first contact.

The medium:
The "Kobayashi Maru" was funny at first but just kind of fizzled out at the end.

The less than medium:
We never really got to know Tyler as a crew member or at all really, so her reveal as a Krill was a little toothless. I just couldn't buy that Ed wouldn't notice her "fish out of water" mistakes and have a prolonged relationship with her regardless.
I saw elements of "Hell in the Pacific", "Enemy Mine" and every other use of the "two enemies stranded and must help each other to survive" trope. Lazy writing IMO.
The fighters circling the shuttle looked a little too slick and CGI.

I'm trying to think of a weak episode of this show...I didn't love the one with Rob Lowe, I don't guess. Amazingly strong run so far, though.
