THE ORVILLE S2, E2: "PRIMAL URGES"

I'll admit that the Bortus-centric episodes aren't really my favorites, & I probably could've done with a few less Moclan porn scenes & a couple more about the B plot instead, but all in all, I didn't dislike the episode. Parts of it are really good. Claire as their marriage counselor played really well imho
The A plot is kind of reminiscent of Reginald Barclay's Hollow Pursuits too... taken to its extreme of course lol

This is definitely the most memorable scene of the episode. Always cracks me up....

Too bad there's no Counsellor Troi in tonight's episode.

However, I heard Marina Sirtis is scheduled to have a guest star role later in the series.

Admiral Deanna Troi. Who knew ;);)??

**VAGUELY SPOILERY BITS***

Another excellent episode.

This one was much more exciting all around! Great visuals, some genuinely laugh out loud moments (the scene with Isaac in the simulator towards the end made me laugh until my stomach hurt), the pain of what happened with Topa finally coming to light, and being addressed between Klyden and Bortus, the moments with the remnant of survivors, all well done.

There were some truly touching moments, and the scenes between Klyden and Bortus were some of the best I've seen in the series so far. We learned, also, what happens when Moclans divorce. It is... brutal.

Still, the episode touches on a number of real life issues, and I think this one also punches up the effort to present an actual drama/comedy rather than a slapstick, as people have assumed in the past.

I also enjoy the continuity. What happens in past episodes does show up later on, and can have lasting effects. I have high hopes for this season.

Also:

"Hi, I'm Dann!"

It still kills me.

Yes, that was a good episode. Nothing groundbreaking mind you, but it took a standard Berman Trek format (character focus A plot, sci-fi B plot) and put a spin on them that Trek couldn't at the time (partially because it was too stuffy to go there, partially because internet porn wasn't really a big thing - though it was implied that was part of Barclay's holoaddiction).

The Orville also continues to show that it's not TNG or VOY, and there really isn't a reset button. Bortus's relationship began souring all the way back at the time of About A Girl. Presumably the effects of this episode on his character will also become clearer as time passes.

I have a hard time believing that this episode was held over from last season, if only because Bortus and Klyven's son was rapidly aged in the same manner as in the last episode - not a baby like in the first season.

Also, I'm glad to see that the Union doesn't believe that if a bunch of folks are going to get incinerated by their star, you just need to let them all die since they don't have warp drive.

The only down side is that while the planet breaking up looked amazing, they didn't even try to make it look scientifically accurate. Of course if the sun really had swelled to a supergiant, the planet would have been a ball of molten lava by the time they got there anyway. And I'm pretty sure it would be enveloped by the photosphere well before it was destroyed.

The last part didn't really bother me. I mean, I mentally took note of it, but if I can allow myself to accept that someone's DNA can be altered and then reverted without any repercussions (TNG did it a lot, as did VOY), then I can let this one slide. :D

Apparently, it’s the Moclan tradition to kill the mate when they want a divorce.

Whoa! And I thought the Moclans are kinder, gentler version of the Klingons

Another fine episode. I love the musical homages to First Contact. Glad to hear the Goldsmith vibes continuing. Looking forward to next week.

I also think the scenes from the doomed planet are callbacks to TNG's 'Pen Pals' and 'The Inner Light' (living underground would've been Kamin's people last ditch effort at survival once their planet goes nova too).

I've been lukewarm on The Orville since it debuted. It's OK. It's occasionally entertaining. It's a TNG fan film. However, it does explore families and spouses living on a starship far better than its inspiration.

Bortus' line to Issac about addiction is spot on. Satisfying the urge leaves death in its wake. Very true in my experience.

This definitely was the holdover episode from 1st season. It was OK.

That Molcan child is growing fast.

Just like Star Trek, it is nice that all aliens (even those never encountered before) use the same communication system and frequencies.

Nice reference to Raiders of the Lost Arc.

I really don't care for Moclan porn. I prefer Quark's holosuite programs.

I enjoyed this, I enjoy and look forward to the show but I will not lie to all of you I need some more serious sci-fi stories. The comedy is fine but I kinda expect more when there are ex-Trek folks running and contributing to the show.

And I expect to get yelled at for this opinion but it is just that, my opinion.

The reset button is pushed between episodes of Voyager so that there are no consequences from last weeks story felt during the next week. You can play any random handful of any episodes from any season, in any order, and it will make as much sense as the broadcast order (within reason, don't go playing the two parters backwards.).

Surprised they're still around after they closed the forums, where stuff was often a lot more wrong. :(
I don't quite understand your logic but I do miss the forums. For me the nuggets of interesting tidbits and observations was worth sifting through the chaff.

Boring episode. Way too many scenes of Bortus getting his porn on. It was like one of those Saturday Night Live sketches that go on way too long to be funny or entertaining. Nice visuals, good humor and music though.
If only they had Bortus fantasizing over Tracy Morgan...
