I'm certainly disappointed by Discovery, yeah. It looks to me as if, from a creative POV, Trek is pretty much over - The new show slaps fresh paint on the same worn out cliches and notions while filing off a lot of the bits that gave the old thing some character. You can always satisfy a certain percentage of folks who are invested in a thing, but so what?
Well, that's your opinion of Discovery, of course. There are plenty others of us who think Discovery is quite good. Opinions are subjective--some will like or dislike. No big deal really.

But, yes, I do like the fun aspect of The Orville!

I don't "claim my opinion as fact."

Apparently some folks on the web are aggrieved if opinions they don't like aren't offered with lots of forelock tugging and plastered with silly acronyms like "IMHO."

Get over that. It's obvious to anyone that any judgment rendered on a piece of art is an opinion.

Discovery is lame, a waste of resources and not worth paying a couple of bucks to watch.
I guess I just don't see the need to disparage the show here? It's not contributing to the discussion about The Orville at all. Looks like you just want to get potshots in, but as you've seen, that's just derailed this thread about The Orville.

All of which is fine. I get that. Hell, if we all wanted the same thing, life would be boring. But, what I don't like is using The Orville as a bludgeon against Discovery and all of Trek.
Agreed. To put it in the lingo of this very thread, it's fucking lame.

So stop watching.
The day may come when I give up on this show. Today is not that day.

I think the show is fun, the characters fun, and the stories interesting there's a lot about our own culture to discuss from this episode.
Yeah, it's fun, but that's it. And there really isn't that much to discuss.

What is there to discuss from DISC latest episode? How grim and angst so-and-so was when they made a tough decision? The previous episode had much to say on a battle between ideologies and how even acts of humanity can cause acts of terrorism.
There's the ongoing ethics of what Stamets did. Sarek's revelation about why he was upset over Spock joining Star Fleet. Lorca's PTSD. His relationship with the admiral. The admiral's fate, including if she is a minor TOS character. What Saru will think of Lorca's decision regarding Michael's posting. Whether Tilly has what it takes to be a Commander. I could go on.

Yeah, it's a bit clumsy and imperfect and could be better but I'm enjoying the hell out of this
Exactly my view on Discovery.

I think a coda with Kelly talking about get pulled into the culture she down voted the PR guy. It's more meaningful to me to see the barista girl turn off the TV without casting a vote because she'd not informed enough to make any decision
Why not both?

Yes, and we are all big Star Trek fans.
Of course we're all big Star Trek fans, no one would invest as much time in this forum if they weren't. However, being a big Trek fan doesn't mean we're blind to its flaws, nor are we forbidden from recognizing that another show is doing a better job at Trek's territory than Trek itself. And just because someone may like Orville more than Discovery doesn't make them less of a Trek fan because of it. Truth be told, Orville is a much better done television show than Discovery is.

Again, it seems that enjoying The Orville seems to cause people to confuse opinion for fact. I personally feel that Discovery is a much better television show.

I'm really enjoying both DSC and The Orville, other than the Trek connection they're both different enough that I don't really even compare them that much.
Same here.

This is a valid statement, that is also highly subjective. My struggle, as noted by others, is the need to use one show as a baseball bat to the ego of the other show.

If someone could shop the Rebellion symbol out for the Union symbol, this would work:

Just got to watch "Majority Rule" due to a busy week. Loved it. This show is just hitting on all cylinders for me.

Watched it last night, just now looked at this thread because I had been avoiding spoilers. A few items:

1. To those saying they should have directly hacked the counts, well, that actually *wouldn't* properly parody what the Russians have been doing, which is much more like what the crew of the Orville actually did.
2. To those talking about other shows that "did it first", perhaps the fact that the Chinese are doing it for real is the more important part, and the more shows discussing the issue, the better.
3. This show consistently surprises me with its high quality. They aren't revolutionary, but they certainly know how to take something they already know people like or that is topical and provide an interesting spin.
4. There is literally NO race between Discovery and The Orville. Discovery requires a subscription service, and you can pretty much watch each around each other however you see fit in your schedule. There are people here who love each, and plenty, such as myself, that love both. So knock yer shit off. :P

I can agree that Lamar's reaction after being saved from the "correction" did seem a bit out of place, you'd think they guy would need a clean pair of underwear (to borrow a term from Malloy) since he was literally seconds away from being lobotomized, you'd think leaving the room he'd have a touch of tact and humility to him. So that's a gripe I can give it, it would've been interesting to see how he reacted to everything and maybe thought to be less impulsive and obvious/crass with his humor.

I think the metaphor being built here would've worked better if he's also show some degree of actual humility and forgiveness for what he did during his "Apology Tour" he knows what is at stake and like the second show's host said he came out laughing, smiling and celebrating like he wasn't in deep shit. He acted more like a celebrity host on Colbert than a "criminal" needing to get the "jury" on his side. So, yeah, there are some gripes I can put out there on how the show did thing but the "vibe" I mostly get from this show is that the characters are mostly stagnate like sitcom characters so they're always going to have to behave a certain way to fill their role. This show isn't trying to be a hard, serialized. drama. It's very episodic with following episodes virtually being a "reset button."

But the "message" and allegory the episode was going for is what struck with me more just because it felt so damn much like our own society on a purely social (not legal) level. The barista girl when she meets the landing party the second time says something like, "Ugh, I actually thought he was cute at first! Makes my skin crawl!" all because the guy got a ton of "down votes" from a viral video of doing something stupid. Again, very much mirroring the overreactionary statements and comments people will make on others when they do something wrong (but ultimately meaningless and harmless) it changes their entire perception of the person from "Hay, you're cute!" to "Ugh! Get away from me, creep!"

(I'm also curious to go back read some of the commentary in the feed, some of the screen caps of I've seen of it the comments in it, sheesh, reminds me of so many news article comment sections)

I liked this episode quite a bit. Although I have to say - with their 24th century tech, why not just hack the voting system directly? Hell, the android should have been capable of that by himself.

Of course in some alternative mirror universe out there it is perfectly acceptable to enjoy both series and even Star Wars, DC and Marvel movies each on their own merits.
