The Orville. Anyone loving it?

I had heard about The Orville but I hadn't watched it until @TribbleFeeder started a thread about The Orville vs, Discovery. It sounded interesting so I gave it a try. I am about half way through the second season and I'm liking it way more than Discovery. I've been trying to space the episodes out until the third season starts.
that's awesome to hear. It's like a nostalgia trip in terms of pacing, how it's filmed, the look and feel.. but they don't trample on canon or legacy type characters.

Guess what .. I like Captain Mercer.. a lot. He always makes the right moral choices but is hung up on whether or not the little trivial details are right

The one thing I wish Discovery would rip from The Orville playbook is not taking itself so seriously.

Seth MacFarlane is a huge Star Trek nerd and got someone to pay him to do his own version, good for him, he's living the dream but that doesn't make it a great show, it's a fan film with a budget and like most fan films it's a bit too much in love with what came before. It's a new show but it feels dated because it copies so much from TNGs aesthetics and style, I watched the occasional episode and it's ok but it never feels like it's going somewhere TNG didn't go 30 years ago. A lot of that is by design but it doesn't appeal to me, if I wamt to watch TNG I'll just rewatch TNG.

50/50 from me. They did bring in a lot of producers/writers from TNG, and one or two new writers that definitely adhered to the style (especially season 2, season 1 feels like what would happen if Star Trek TOS made love with Sliders and Orville is the result), right down to a couple plotlines taken directly from TOS (e.g. the hollow planet-sized ship one, which was good (but nowhere near my favorite) but it's easily the one episode that actually feels like having too much homage... The one with Alara confronting her horrors is a classic and is distinctly "Orville". The "Kelly is a god" episode is a new take on the theme VOY used with "Blink of an Eye" (that Futurama and Simpsons also used). The practical joke episode, the 2D episode, and most of the other episodes did things no Trek before it could - due to lack of time or resources or even thinking of trying those concepts. Heck, for those saying Isaac is a ripoff of Battlestar Galactica, BSG is a ripoff of Moses and his people's journey and "The Lost Tribes" in the Bible. And Star Wars ripped off quite a bit as well. How well these shows innovate seems to be as important.)

After being used to arcs in television, Orville did feel different for its lack of it in season one, and for season two it was rushing way too many arcs all while finding the time to plunk in a couple of pointless filler episodes (the smartphone episode being both the laziest and the most unnecessary one of the bunch) - making me wonder if they thought the show would be canceled.

I'll admit, rewatching TNG season 1, Orville feels like it's innovated from that as well.

The cool thing is, old shows updated for a modern day audience rarely work. Orville seems to have managed it better than others, even with my nitpicks there's still more to it than the sum of its parts. FOX had a sketch show last decade using the style of 1960s "Laugh-In" and it didn't catch on and people calling it stupid, all while missing the point of the show. FOX also had a sitcom where only 7 people survived nuclear annihilation called "Woops!", framed it on Gilligan's Island (a show still massively popular at that time), and people panned it as being dumb. (It's not as dumb as GI, and I adore that one almost as much as I do "Woops!", they're all delightful escapist silliness) Which might be why it became more popular to dig up dead shows and revive them, so the audience recognizes the name and feels all cozy instead.

The Orville playbook is not taking itself so seriously.

I find that to be one of its biggest strengths. I mean, sure, The Orville could easily have been a straight-fired sci-fi like we've seen so many times before, but instead it often pokes fun at itself and looks outwardly. If we can't laugh at ourselves every now and then, then we're doomed. Doomed, I tell you! ;) May Avis be on our side! Anything else just Hertz.

One thing I would love to see them do is visit a planet where everyone speaks old English ala Shakespeare. That'd be a nice tribute to Shatner and other Trek actors like Stewart who first started with Shakespeare.

I'm sort of in love with this show. Near the end of season 2 and this is definitely one of those shows that I wish had been around a lot longer then it has. It's great.

What's your favourite episodes?

Home
Nothing Left On Earth Excepting Fishes
All The World Is Birthday Cake
Lasting Impressions
Identity - Liked it but it felt like something I've seen before.
Firestorm
Mine are:

* Old Wounds
*Command Performance (despite it riffing almost too much from "The Cage")
*Pria (classic!!!)
* Krill (classic!!!)
*Majority Rule (feels like a Sliders episode, but I can dig it)
*Into the Fold (is more a visceral tale; works great the first time but lacks enough material to withstand multiple viewings but it's told extremely well, Isaac is cool, and Claire gets a few kick-ass lines about valuing life and so on.)
*Cupid's Dagger (despite the lame bodily function jokes, this had a few good turns)
*Firestorm (Classic!!!)
*New Dimensions (Classic!!!)
*Mad Idolatry (Classic!)

*Nothing Left On Earth Excepting Fishes (near-classic but well-handled!!)
*All The World Is Birthday Cake (near-classic but well-handled!!)
*A Happy Refrain (weird at first, but grew on me and had some novel plot twists)
*Deflectors
*Identity (pt 1 anyway; pt 2 is just one running cliche after another, often to make an illogical excuse to prevent the killing of the Orville crew (who were superfluous, which Kelly even points out early on - she could do an episode of TV Sins on youtube) and was disappointing. Yes, pt 2s often don't match pt 1's build-up but this one falls flat and takes the cake...)
*Tomorrow & Tomorrow & Tomorrow/The Road Not Taken (near-classics)

Vudu isn’t even close to Blu-Ray quality with all the compression. It’s closer to upscaled DVD.

Vudu did have season 1 of The Orville in HDX. That's a step up from HD streaming, but not as good as 4k uhd.

It's still not quite blu ray quality either, but still it looked really crisp and wonderful.

that's what I have. I love it and am perfectly fine.

Hoping to never be dependent on 4k, smooth motion stuff .. i just like the character

When people say they want Orville to be less "Trek " and more it's own thing, on one hand I can understand.. my take is: I'm in no hurry. First, the things that are different, both large.. and mostly small.. are the most intriguing parts (like the modern music, the occasional dick jokes, the different races).. but my point is that.. TNG and the shows of that era.. that's how i grew up.. formative shows.. once they ended I never thought I'd see shows like that again. Even star Trek proper has steered away from making optimistic television with ship-board interpersonal drama. They've steered away from simple two camera scenes that accent the drama between the characters.. they steered away form scenes that make me feel like I'm living on a ship. Oh Picard is coming back? Can't wait, save for the fact that Stewart is so old now.. and it shows mainly in his delivery. I'm not dissin' it.. I'm very interested to see where is character is at and what he is up to.. but the things to me that are iconic about his character.. namely his amazing ready room scenes where he has some awesome moral argument .. nothing flashy.. were what made Picard Picard. But, to my point, here is a show that is basically bringing new episodes to that kind of old formula that I love, where the actors and the crew behind the scenes are in their prime.. that they actually have something new to say.. and I can feel right at home right again.. there are hundreds of other "different" shows to watch.. but without the Orville, I won't get a chance to watch "new" episodes of the very formulas that helped form who I am now.

And that is what The Orville is for the most part IMO, a nostalgiafest for those who grew up watching episodic Berman era Trek and miss it dearly and uncritically.

My issues with it being close to Trek is just that there are some episodes that are pretty much the exact same story as an episode of one of the Trek series. Usually there's enough different for it to feel fairly unique, but it would be nice if it was more different. That's my one issue with it, other than that I really enjoy it and I'm very much looking forward to next season.

Do you think there will be some kind of alliance with the Krill or will they reneg?

I wish they'd do an episode dealing with First Contact as set in the Orville universe. That could be interesting.

Been a fan of it since day one, which is surprising, because while I respect Seth MacFarlane's vocal talent, I don't like his creative output. Every episode after the first kept getting better until it climaxed at "Pria" and the one where they infiltrate the Krill ship.

My favorite episodes are:
Pria- very nice and dramatic
Krill- begins to show the action and intrigue possible within this universe
Mad Idolatry- a proper prime directive episode that doesn't involve letting innocents die when it's within your power to help
Home- Good work from Alara
Nothing Left on Earth Excepting Fishes- the payoff from Krill that we had all been expecting
A Happy Refrain- that dancing scene just took my breath away. Something about Mark Jackson's performance is astounding
Identity- Going from the high point of Malloy singing (what a beautiful voice), to that shocking finale. I told my wife when the pilot premiered that I suspected Isaac's arc would go this way.
Identity, Part II- Not as tightly written as part 1, but it showcases good action scenes, enemies becoming allies and I like how the Union leaves the possibility of forgiveness and reconciliation.
The second finale- Nice high-stakes stuff again, but it never feels like it's getting too far out there.

Overall much better than STD.

They seemed to be headed towards at least a less hostile relationship with Krill, if not a full on alliance.

Possibly but this Avis is a stupid god, with a stupid name.

Better hide all those historical documents where Avis is a car rental company.

The nice thing is that I can not watch it and then occasionally watch and episode and still feel like I haven't missed anything.

Bortus has been interesting, but generally it has not landed for me. Whenever I feel like Captain Mercer is going somewhere it falls back on humor. So, I feel no motivation to continue on the journey.

yeah.. but peopel are basically wathcing the exact same story whenever a new cop movie comes out, or a new superhero movie comes out, or whenever a new "kids in a small town meet strange things" story comes out.
If everyone is so eager for Orville to JUST be it's own thing and not use this (still valid) formula, why is that the Lion King and Aladdin remakes or the latest SW films made a killing at the box office? Please explain that?
There are 100s of thousands of options to watch on tV now, and the option I want is new old Trek!!!

And while the show is building an underlying narrative.. I am so glad that it is largely episodic.
