The origin of your username

Dukhat was the deceased leader of the Minbari in Babylon 5. I chose that name when I originally joined Flare Forums back in the late '90's, and just used the same name when I joined here. It just kind of stuck. But in all honesty I have no particular affection for the name or the character and don't even recall why I chose it for my nickname. But I am loathe to change it because that's simply how people recognize me. It's like not wanting to change your cellphone number, even though I'd change my username in a heartbeat if I knew that everyone would know who I was.

My Halloween moniker is seasonally themed and has CC initials. It will be chosen similarly at Christmas time. With the initials, I've gone wild and used soft C before (S sound), but usually I stick to hard C's (K sounds); Ch not pronounced as a K is right out. Within these creative confines I consider carefully.

I actually did an analysis on the staff at Hogwarts... it's true, some of them were pretty unimpressive. Only one of them (McGonagall) got the highest score available, and I think half a dozen of them had failing scores. Dumbledore really needs to rethink his hiring practices.

I've read a few "Dumbledore-bashing" fanfic stories in which this issue is addressed (along with many others; suffice to say that Dumbledore is definitely not one of my favorite HP characters).

There are a couple of YT channels - Harry Potter Theory and Harry Potter Folklore that explore some of the plot holes and WTF moments of the novels and movies.


Anyway, username: Timewalker. I love science fiction, especially time travel. I love history, especially ancient/classical Greece, Rome, and Egypt, plus the Plantagenet/Tudor eras. My SCA persona is based in the late 10th century.

Part of my inspiration also came from the fact that most of the people in the Society for Creative Anachronism branch I was active in were also science fiction fans who enjoyed playing D&D and Civilization (the original board game, pre-computer game, though we all got into that as well eventually).

I look at this part of my life as "I can't decide which century I want to live in, so I'm just going to try them all." I walk through time, exploring as I go - in many different universes, simultaneously.


I've had a lot of different usernames on various forums and sites over the years. If anyone here is into NaNoWriMo, I'm active as Timewalker on the forum there as well.

Just type FORMERLY DUKHAT on your avatar and leave that until people get used to seeing whatever new name you choose.

I was DS9Sega for some years here because I worked as a game designer on the DS9 game for the Sega Genesis (ported to the SNES), but eventually went to my given name because I'm actually not DS9 fan.

When I was a kid I used to download two things… batches of .txt Star Trek scripts and Government files about aliens/UFO’s as I was always interested in ‘space things’ and the unexplained. I’m sure that I have read it or at least some form of it… I remember reading Phase II stuff too, though that *might* have been in book form which is where my confusion stems from?

I also remember reading a script very similar to what would become the movie ‘Event Horizon’. I have joked about this on TrekBBS in the past referring to this film as a missing Star Trek film in a new sci-fi skin.

The Star Trek version was a bit larger in scale, though that may have just been my imagination.

It could have just been fan-fic though.

I used to read Doctor Who books from my local library and be *very* disappointed when I eventually got to see the episodes on screen, the exception being Genesis of the Daleks.

In my view Genesis of the Daleks is not only the best of the Tom Baker era, the best of Classic Who, but the best Doctor Who story, period.

That said, there's something extra about Ian Marter's tie-in novels. Who better to adapt the first season of the Tom Baker era than the actor who played Harry Sullivan? He added a nice amount of original material to round out The Sontarans, as that was only a 2-part story.

I remember taking The Ark in Space with me to college to read during a bit of downtime before my evening anthropology class. There I was, sitting in the cafeteria with my egg salad sandwich and fruit juice, reading Ian Marter's graphic descriptions of how the space grasshoppers murdered the Ark's inhabitants, all the while chewing on my sandwich and suddenly feeling like upchucking.

Any writer capable of eliciting that response has a definite way with adjectives and imagery.

*sigh* for the days when new paperbacks were only $3.95 with no GST... I still have my Target books I bought in the '80s, and the ones bought new are still in great shape.

It's connected to the roleplaying game Shadowrun, which i played way back in the day.

I had a character called Alpha, who was a native american magic user, following the Wolf totem ( a Physical Adept for those who played the game and know what this is, for the others it's basically a magic user who uses his magic to increase his physical power).

Since Alpha usually was taken in all message boards and everywhere else i added the FP which is short for the german company Fanpro, who had the Shadowrun license back in the 90s and 00s, when i played the game and this username stuck around.

There was a novel compilation series (3 really thick books I think it was) which had all of the original series episodes rewritten in to ‘short story’ format. I was inspired to read them through watching the first run of TNG on BBC2 6pm on Wednesdays. I was disappointed that the books did not have the same characters as TNG at first.

You thought James Blish had written the TNG episodes into short story form?

If memory serves, he died before TNG came along. I bought Star Trek 4 and 6 on November 28, 1975. Those two books were the beginning of my science fiction collection.

Yes by James Blish! I bought the books *knowing* that Picard and crew were not in the stories but gave them a shot anyway as Star Trek was slapped on the front. I wanted the stories to be about the TNG crew though as I loved watching them on TV.

There were not many TNG books out at the time, so I had to dabble in TOS. I think there was only the Encounter at Farpoint novelisation and The Eye of the Beholder available… or at least that I could find at the time.

It's pretty easy to find the older, smaller paperbacks with Blish's adaptations. I really like the cover art. Any thicker volumes would have been (re) compilations of those. I think a few years back Barnes and Noble or some other book company did a really big hardbound volume that had everything, or nearly everything. But then you don't get the classic cover art.

Do you remember the early TNG novels making a big deal about Riker's keen sense of smell? Like he would have inner monologues about how he could tell that so-and-so only used plain soap and no fragrances.

I don’t even know what happened to my first computer. I built it myself a piece at a time as I couldn’t afford a computer and always had wanted one but bought components each month… took about half a year or maybe a bit more to complete. The motherboard one month, a graphics card the next, processor the month after and so on.

I have no idea where it is….It just went. Probably left behind in the old house when my mum and dad split along with the rest of my Star Trek stuff.

Yes, that's a later re-compilation. Originally, Blish's adaptations were released in twelve smaller paperback volumes from 1967 to 1977. As his health declined in the 1970s, much of it was actually done in collaboration with his wife J. A. Lawrence, and she wrote some of the episode adaptations herself but wasn't credited until the final volume. Blish passed away in 1975.

Mine came from a book trilogy by Mercedes Lackey called The Last Herald Mage. The three books are Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise and Magic's Price. They are the story of Vanyel Ashkevron. He was a homosexual, in a world where homosexuality was accepted as a normal part of life. He was the first openly gay character, with full love life, in a fantasy novel that I had ever read. The books are currently under development to be a series, hopefully on a streaming platform.
