the only gay command character in T.V sci-fi?

On the Battlestar Galactica finale, a gay/bi character was briefly put in charge of the last major human ship in the galaxy. Is this one of the first times that a gay/bi character has been put in such a prominent command position?

Um Admiral Cain on Galactica was commander of the Pegasus. She was a Lesbian.

Admiral Cain from earlier in the series. (D'oh! Beaten while I was previewing!)

Jack Harkness (heads Torchwood in the Doctor Who universe).

Earlier, Gaeda was in charge of the fleet - sort of - and he was gay.

Also, this thread needs a spoiler tag - not everyone has seen the BSG finale, yet. I don't really care, I'm just sayin' ;)

Did you already forget about Susan Ivanova from Babylon 5? She's bi, and came out ... what, 15 years ago? BSG is still following in B5's footsteps.

BSG is a sci-fi show, maybe these people don't have stupid meaning words, maybe they just like who they like?

Because one of the people already brought up is NOT gay, he dated a woman who was a robot, and a human male.

I heard tell that Hoshi was gay via the BSG forum, but can't recall that it ever made it to the TV screen. Which means for most people, the guy wasn't gay.

I've always wondered if the name "Gaeda" was a play-upon word.

I wouldn't point out either Battlestar Galactica nor Babylon 5 as particularly notable examples of gay characters in charge. Ivanova's relationship with Talia was quickly swept under the rug in favor of the more traditional pairing with Marcus. Cain was a despot. Gaeta was misguided as hell, essentially another villanous figure, and his homosexuality was only ever made explicit in The Face of The Enemy webisodes.

If this is the best televised science fiction has got...try again

And I speak as a fan of both series.

Yup! :)

The character (bi, with a boyfriend) and the actor (gay), which is braver than the American politics of preferably casting straight guys in gay roles to make the audience more comfortable.

If you're into that sort of thing (soft), click the first link below. :D

Why would a heterosexual actor portraying a homosexual character make the audience more comfortable? Who gives a shit about the actor's orientation? :wtf:

Well, we know the Hoshi line will die out on Earth.

When Adama promoted him to admiral and gave him command of the fleet, I thought Hoshi was going to calmly tell him "I can't suck Gaeta's **** because of you."

I've seen them of course, but remind me, did they make out much?
If you want to see guys (and everybody else) making out in a Sci Fi show, watch Torchwood.

Producers seem to believe that it's more awkward to see homosexuality being portrayed by real gays, being supposedly less make-believe. There have been comments in the media about it and, silly or not, it makes sense. Also, comments by performers that the actual audience of a show doesn't really care. ;) Producers worry about "the public".

I'm convinced that Captain Janeway was gay. Don't tell me that wasn't barely restrained romantic passion in her voice when she saw Seven again for the first time in "Endgame."
