News The ongoing next Star Trek movie thread

“[Beyond co-writer] Doug [Jung] and I, we were going to write a spin-off about the character of Jaylah called ‘Jaylah and the Wolf.’ Sophia [Boutella], she did such a great job with her, and she was such a great character. We had this idea that Jaylah was going to go Starfleet Academy and she was going to be put into a group of cadets who were like problem cadets, who were called ‘The Wolf Pack’ and they were sent off to a real planet called Wolf 359 and would get into an adventure on this planet. Yeah, for a while we were working on that, but in the end, it just didn’t happen.”

Wolf 359 is a star, not a planet.

Also, Vulcan and the Klingon homeworld are actually not in Earth's solar system.

But other than that Pegg really seems to understand Star Trek :shifty:

I feel as though the ship for a 4th Kelvin-verse movie has sailed. It's been too long since Beyond came out and with the law of diminishing returns that happened with Into Darkness and Beyond there just really doesn't seem to be all that much of a demand for a 4th movie by many people. Personally, I'd love a 4th movie, but I just don't see it happening.

They had Gorn and a salt vampire ready for ST'09, but cut them from the film.

If there's one more outing, may as well find a way to incorporate both them in the film.

The only thing they could get done quickly in time is a P+ streaming movie of that Jaylah and the Wolf idea that was revealed a month or so ago.

if they had gorn i wonder if they had casted a laana but was axed

I'm going to go out on a limb, here, but if Skydance is serious about bringing Trek back to the big screen, and they actually produce something, I seriously doubt it will have anything to do with the KT. As you say, that ship has sailed. I'm hoping however, that whatever they do come up with will be something original and not some stupid nostalgia crap that we've been getting for the last 5+ years.

Any Trek movie with original characters will have to introduce us to them, and to a lesser extent, their world (the planet/ship/status of the Federation, etc. - those things specific to the film and the era it takes place) A movie with familiar characters can have a bit less of that because many people will already know who they are.

Did you know who Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, the Empire and the Rebel Alliance were before you saw Star Wars?

Vaguely. But then it predated me, so I had the chance to hear/read/infer things first.

Imagine if instead of having TNG as a show first, we had TOS and then a movie about TNG in which you introduced everything and everyone - the crew, the ship, the state of the Federation in the 24th century. Everything essential to know about the E-D and its crew (in order to understand what's going on) would have to be introduced in that single film, which takes time that could be spent on more story and spectacle and building on what you know. A TV show can have moments that would be cut from a film because it has (in those days) 26 hours or so, give or take commercials etc., not 2 1/2 hours.

I think a general audience would be just fine watching a Star Trek movie if they’ve never seen Star Trek before, and only ‘vaguely’ knew about it. It’s not like Trek is so deep that the average Joe couldn’t figure out what was going on, even if Kirk and Spock weren’t in it.

Not saying it isn't possible, just that a movie can spend time on other things rather than character introduction from scratch or be shorter if the filmmakers so desire and that information is still available elsewhere to those who want to see it.

If you want context, you can watch episodes of the show; if you don't, you can just watch the movie; you might miss out on extra layers (so that's why they did that) but you can still enjoy what you do see.

I’d bet very few people who went to see TWOK had seen Khan before in ‘Space Seed.’ And you know what? They didn’t have to. The movie made it crystal clear, and with very minimal explanation, just who Khan was and what beef he had with Kirk. And everything was just fine and dandy.
