News The ongoing next Star Trek movie thread

Jeez, at this point they should just reuse old b-roll footage of the last 3 movies, hire some cheap extras for new emotional reaction footage and mix it all together. Audience wouldn’t notice anyway

This part looks like the expression of an opinion about an as-yet-unmade movie. Those are fine.

This is a disparaging shot at other Trek fans. Those are not fine, and doing anything like that again may earn you a warning.

That too will probably get shelved by Paramount.

Even if they get the film approved and finally filmed, will the fans like it? Fans haven’t been universally onboard with the visions for DIS & PIC. And yet, Paramount chose someone from DIS to write the film.

Just wondering what their general thought process is here. Do they want the film itself to make money? Or do they want their current vision of Star Trek as seen on streaming to make money?

They want everything they do to make money. If their projections put that in doubt, then they don't make it. That could be why the last several years are littered with abandoned attempts to make another Star Trek movie.

Okay.

So, what are Paramount seeing that makes them think that a film headlined by major names (Pine, Quinto, Saldana, Urban, Pegg, Cho, and possibly Hemsworth) would lose money?

If you can’t make money with this cast, would adding William Shatner or Patrick Stewart to the film make a difference?

Indeed, and even with this cast the amount of money to invest in this project, in addition to what has already been invested, makes the return of investment less.

not fair, i was not aiming at Trek fans in particular but the general audience which would eventually pay the studio’s bills. Because let’s face it, big budget movies are made for a broader audience and for most people a movie is just something to get entertained with.

That being said, i stand by my (maybe oversubtle expressed) opinion that the general audience doesn’t give a rat’s ass if a new movie is basically a rehash of its predecessors. There are many examples…

Paramount messed up so many approaches to produce a new Trek movie. Pointing out that at some point people just stop caring shouldn’t give me a warning. But that’s just my 2c

If you have a dispute with the moderator's admonishment please take it up with them via PM rather than here in the thread. Thank you.

And if I have a script ready, and I’m aware that the Kelvin cast is willing to work, and I have all of these tv shows on the air ripe for crossover potential both on the small screen and the big screen – not to mention the legacy shows – then I’m pushing ahead and finding “efficiencies” as they say, to make it as affordable as possible. And accepting that at the very least, this upcoming movie is going to be the costliest to make and can be made up with a fifth and sixth installment that will just have to be cheaper to produce.

The reluctance to film sounds like they don't have a plan beyond the next film. Which is the opposite of someone like me who has a well articulated artistic vision, as mentioned earlier in the thread.

Then submit it to Paramount. They clearly don't have the confidence to make it and that it will make the money they want to justify the cost. Fans confidence does not mean real world profit.

I wonder how hard Paramount tried to get Abrams himself to direct it once the other guy dropped out and he just wouldn’t do it.

Paramount has officially pulled it from their slate. Not postponed. Pulled.

I think most of us knew the announcement in Feb was.... Optimistic... so I doubt this will be a surprise to anyone except the most ardent "They announced it so it must happen, even if the cast says they don't know anything about it!" forum members.
They'll announce it again when there's another investor thing. And shelve it again a few months later.
