The One Thing That Annoys Me About "Star Trek Next Generation"

Don't disagree about his self-esteem issues -- probably a result of his relationship with his dad and feeling inadequate. However, I do think Riker is one of the most open-minded and liberal characters in all of Star Trek. He embraces other cultures and traditions (the man nearly relished eating gagh), he fell for an androgynous alien, he is completely comfortable wearing a skant and scolds Worf for having a "backwards" point of view about skants, he has what is essentially an open relationship with Troi for most of TNG, etc. He's definitely a little arrogant sometimes, but I don't think he's close minded.
On paper he's open minded. Respect for other cultures, embracing progressive ideals, Starfleet principles, etc... sure, but personally? No one bucks harder at Ro Laren than he does, & no one turns their nose down on an up-comer, like Sam Lavelle, or Shelby faster than he does.

He looks down his nose on his own duplicate for god sake, & none of the main crew ever showed as much insubordination as him, when he acted like a big baby with Edward Jellico. That's not just arrogance, He is close minded about what HE already thinks. Maybe narrow-minded is the better term. He makes his mind up about something & that's the end of it.

At times when he's had to replace Picard, no less than 3 different people have had to snap him out of his mindset to get him right. Guinan in BoBw, Troi in Gambit, Worf in Time's Arrow. I got to thinking he'd make a terrible captain after a while, because every time he was put in the position, he looked utterly lost & miserable, like in Darmok, or as an Admiral in All Good Things...

Honestly, can you name one single time that Riker was acting captain where he knew exactly what to do, & played it out to form the way it needed to go, without stumbling through it or somebody prodding him along? One thing I have to say about A Matter of Perspective... While I surely would never think him capable of the kind of murder he was being accused of, I certainly wasn't surprised that his handling the situation might have led to Apgar feeling threatened enough to pull that stunt. Will can be an overbearing, unforgiving jerk, before he even opens his mouth

That said, I do think it's an interesting character, played mostly well by Frakes, & makes for good drama, but certainly arrogant & at key moments, close-minded or at least narrow-minded. Definitely not overly perfect, or blandly uninteresting

Lool - in Chain of Command all the main characters came off as whiny children. It started when Jellico asked Riker when the 4th shift (which Jellico ordered be created as soon as he stepped off the Transporter Pad); and Riker basically ignores the order because LOWER RANK officers told him it'll be a problem:
JELLICO: Is there a problem with delta shift, Will?

RIKER: There is no delta shift yet, sir. I have spoken to the department heads about changing from three shifts to four, and they assure me it's going to cause us significant personnel problems.

JELLICO: So you have not changed the watch rotation.

RIKER: I was going to explain this to you after the ceremony, sir.

JELLICO: You will tell the department heads that as of now the Enterprise is on a four shift rotation. I don't want to talk about it. Get it done. Now that means delta shift will be due to come on duty in two hours. I expect you to have it fully manned and ready when it does. Is that clear?

And EVEN PICARD gave Riker a look of: "WTF! You do know this man IS now your Commanding officer, right?"

And hell, when Jellico orders changes to the ships power configuration (you know, because they're heading into a situation where they may have to fight/defend themselves) - and Geordi immediately starts whining:

JELLICO: Power transfer levels need to be upgraded by twenty percent. The efficiency of your warp coils is also unsatisfactory.

LAFORGE: Coil efficiency is well within specifications, Captain.

JELLICO: I'm not interested in the specs, Geordi. The efficiency needs to be raised by at least fifteen percent.

LAFORGE: Fifteen percent.

DATA: That is an attainable goal, but it will require realigning the warp coil and taking the secondary distribution grid offline.
JELLICO: Very good, Data. That's exactly what I want you to do.

LAFORGE: If we take this grid offline, we're going to have to shut down exobiology, the astrophysics lab geological research.

OMG! You mean because the Captain wants to be battle-ready some science labs may be shut down...THE HORROR!

If anything it showed how unprofessional the "best crew in Starfleet" was.

Hmmm I dont think says Ent D crew was unprofessional.. As some (myself included) pointed out.. This was the wrong mission entirelyfor this group of ppl - 'loaded for bear'.. On a family ship?!?! As if the US would send Greenpeace or whoever to fight Taliban or whatever..

Also.. The part I think its p2 Geordi does read out of Minos Korva on display screen it clearly reads in Jellicos presence Science 01. The very same thing he claimed he wanted switched..
.
Also.. Their supposed real stealth to get to Celtris.. That one takes the cake.. At the very least offer the man some Gold Pressed latinum.. They worked that better in Unification with that - awfully
giddy lady with the 4 hands or whatnot.. No mission in history was ever done by hitching a ride and not even bribing.. Esp given the Cardassians would ripped Solok to bits if found

But they are Starfleet officers who are trained for this.

might wanna re-read what I put there... FAMILY SHIP

Lieut Worf is maybe the most (& only) battle ready officer....

YES Starfleet as a whole may have officers who were trained to undergo that military... aggressive part of space conflict. IT IS NOT the enterprise, nor would it make any sense to sacrifice the 3 top performers on the ship for ANY sort of mission that risks that much... and even as worse as it was with Picard stuck there, really all 3 of them could easily be killed.. and then what (youve sacrificed for ZILCH!!!)... Enterprise is good for diplomatic circumstance, where a family ship is maybe the utopia you want to showcase, I think the only facsimile from Trek TV is maybe that Section 8 or whatever it was from DS9.

Even in England, Prince Harry/WIll only go out on British Air Force occasions that are heavily screened so that they will never ever find themselves in trouble.. (altho it kind of does add to public perception that they are babies...)

But they are Starfleet officers who are trained for this.

If there is one thing about "STAR TREK: NEXT GENERATION" that truly annoys me is the cast. Aside from Picard (sometimes) and Worf, I found the main cast to be rather dull. The problem for me is that the came off as too ideal and pretentious.
Dude, you crack me up. Kudos for the entertainment. Keep it up. :techman:
