The one thing about Star Trek II that always irks me...

Quinton O'Connor

Commodore

Feel free to correct me on this immediately, because I've only seen the film a handful of times. But am I correct in stating that Kirk's famous "KHAN!" is spoken while Kirk full-well has a plan intact to escape? If so, it just seems kind of ridiculous on the part of everyone involved that he has that breakdown-looking face and tone.

You are correct, but just because he has a plan in place doesn't mean he can't be pissed that Khan keeps killing people around him. Hence the KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNN!

Kirk did have an escape plan; Chekov and Terrell having Ceti Eels inside them, leading to Jedda'a death and Terrell's suicide wasn't part of that plan. Kirk probably also really hoped Khan didn't have and wouldn't get his hands on Genesis...well, he was half-right.

The one thing that irks me about the movie is the emergency door that closes through the horizontal intermix shaft.

Yeah, all good points. I was just thinking back to the last time I watched it, whereby I found myself surprised he had a get-out plan given his... er, fierce reaction.

I think Kirk was over-the-top to "sell it" to Khan so he thought Kirk was really out of options. If he'd just sort of yawned and said "well I'm very disappointed in you, Khan," it would have been seen as suspicious.

That's also something that crossed my mind, but somehow, from a dramatic standpoint, that wasn't enough for me. Zooming in on Shatner's timeless expression... whatever you might think of his acting style there, he certainly meant it.

Look at the emergency bulkhead again. It has a piece down the middle of it whereby the intermix shaft can still work while the bulkhead is in motion.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty obvious that Kirk was pissed off by the body count, not by Khan's taunting about marooning him. This is a moment in the story where it matters that Chekov is someone he knows rather than simply an officer serving aboard another vessel.

Which is apparently the only reason Chekov survived. The Ceti eel was supposed to kill him eventually, but instead it just up and decided to leave for no reason.

Khan was only getting audio. That doesn't explain Kirk's entire face spasming with rage.

I figure the only reason Chekov survived was because McCoy was there with a medkit. The Ceti Alpha folks weren't so fortunate.
