The issues with 11001001 go well beyond sounding harsh. The speech and most other thigns that aren't music sound damaged. As if the frequency range had been shifted and severely reduced.

Interesting. I didn't hear a problem with "11001001" outside of the duplicated dialogue on the left and right. Your watching on a full 7.1 system, yes?

5.1 but a well configured one and the problem persists on the screens interior stereo speakers, on a separate stereo system and with head phones on my laptop. Also so far none of the other episodes (I have checked 14 so far) have this problem.

But they've not done the job right, have they?

So theft is okay as long as the product isn't up to your personal standards?

As you're well aware, I haven't said that. Actually, as you've asked the question, no I wouldn't pay for a substandard, screwed up product that isn't fit for purpose. Give me a proper quality product, and I'll pay a suitable price for it.

Would I "steal" a terribly over priced product that's not fit for purpose? Quite possibly. Considering that if all these buggered discs are recalled (as they should be), they're going in the CBS refuse, I doubt CBS would care too much if I downloaded their faulty product without paying for it.

I'll listen to it again, then. This is the whole episode you're hearing it on, correct?

You may want to try this too -- I'm going to remove the wires from the left and right speakers and just listen to the center and hear if the dialogue sounds normal. I suspect most of these problems are coming directly from the screwed up left and right channels.

Watching 11001001 now, there's definitely something seriously wrong with the dialogue track, volume is far too low as well.

As far as I can tell this is affecting the whole episode. As I don't own the sound system I will test it with your recommendations later this evening when the owner is back.

Max, I tested 11001001 with the FL+FR speakers disconnected. The tinny effect for the dialogue is still present. I have also listened to the FL and FR channels in isolation. The dialogue bleed on those tracks has the same tinny effect as the centre channel. What is interesting is that the music on the centre channel appears unaffected without the reduction in frequency range that the dialogue is suffering from.

Well, there goes my theory. I'll try this on my setup later. Thanks for trying that.

Blimey, this release is going from bad to worse - I was really looking forward to 11001001 as well. Just hope the stereo mix is OK when I get there. Currently watching The Big Goodbye.

The player I've been watching on is an older Magnavox from 2009. When the heat subsides later this evening, I'll try rewatching some of the problem scenes on my PS3 and see if the same issues crop up.

The stereo mix is fine. So the episode is perfectly watchable and the visuals are just completely stunning. The opening blows you away.

Yes, they dropped the ball a bit with some of the audio, but most it is okay and the visual quality simply takes your breath away.

Without the audio glitches, this would've been the best technical home video release Trek had ever seen. Even surpassing the 2009 film.

Casting the problems with the 7.1 mix aside for a moment, is the general quality of the 7.1 audio any better than the DVD audio track, or would the average viewer without a large 7.1 capable home cinema speaker set up be quite happy with the improved HD image and DVD soundtrack?

I don't own a 7.1 surround sound system, but from the few episodes I've watched the overall volume is too low and the dialogue track seems buried. The music and effects track really overpower it. DVD audio mix is superior IMO.

From everything I'm reading here it's just as well I haven't purchased this yet. I'll wait until these things are fixed.

I would say that without the audio glitches, this set was would have been the best release ever for the BD format, considering the video improvement over DVD quality.

Such a shame.

I'm going to be very interested to hear what Mike Okuda has to say about this mess.
