Maxwell, sorry to be so needy :), but do you have time to take screencaps of the other two eps I mentioned? The addiction is strong now, I need another fix to make it until delivery ...

Just to point this out, in case not everyone noticed, but the blu-ray.com review has a separate tab labeled "Screenshots" with about 40 images; some old, many new.

They also available in 1080p if you have a (free) account.

I might be able to do another set with "Lonely Among Us" and "Home Soil" before the 24th. Doing screenshots entail ripping/copying the episodes (or specific chapters) from the disc first, then using another program (like VLC Player) to take the screencaps. I've already deleted the video files I used to take the screencaps on the previous pages.

And, of course, TrekCore is in the process of screencapping every single episode on the S1 set, so you'll soon have thousands of images to go through to scrutinize. :)

It's nearly here folks!

I wonder if TrekCore will try and screencap the exact same time indices as on their DVD caps. Well actually not time indices since they're probably going to vary a bit (you mentioned that a certain shot was a few frames early, for example), but rather if they're going to try and line up the shots. Then I'd probably spend a few hours hacking up a little HTML app that allows a comparison of any shot pair in their archive, probably using a JS implementation of one of the better image scaling algorithms to upsample the DVD shot so it doesn't rely on the shoddy bilinear/bicubic in the browser (and with typed arrays JS is actually reasonably fast today).

Yes! We're already preparing to start screencapping and will be releasing special comparative articles on each episode with our friends at Ex Astris Scientia.

Doubtful I'll get the exact same time indices. But likely I'll get a significant number which match up with the DVD caps I took 10 years ago.

I'm not sure what caps you requested Sho - but if you let me know I can get them to you tomorrow morning as long as there aren't too many. Also - stay tuned to TrekCore tomorrow for my full review of the Season 1 set plus a truckload of new caps :)

We should mention that the HD remastering and Blu-ray project was done by CBS. Paramount, of course, deserves full credit for making the series in the first place. CBS took the large financial risk to do the HD remastering. Their faith in Star Trek and their efforts to please Star Trek's fans have been nothing short of amazing.

Would you be willing to somehow make the TrekCore pages reflect it when you have taken a matching pair, e.g. by crosslinking or otherwise referencing the corresponding cap, say by number? Basically anything that my proposed web app could use to programmatically find pairs in the HTML that TrekCore is serving up.

Thanks! See here for the shot list and note that Maxwell already took care of the trio from Paris.

Yeah, I think it is no small feat and that CBS deserves a hell of a lot of credit for doing this so right instead of cutting corners. I'm hoping the market will reward that ambition and dedication.

I'm still giddy at the whole notion of them doing this! And going all out with this project as well! CBS has been the best thing to happen to Star Trek in over 10 years.

That would be a LOT of work. Simply screencapping an episode takes me around 3 hours. So whilst I can't promise anything - I shall certainly keep it under advisement.

No problem.

I realize that, but I guess you need to try and balance two competing pressures here: On the one hand you want to provide these screen caps ASAP because we're clamoring for them right now, on the other hand TrekCore's mission isn't just to answer this immediate need, but also to serve as a long-term reference archive. And comparing the original TNG to this remastered version, close as it is, is obviously something people are going to want to do again and again for many, many years to come. Enabling such comparisons would add obvious value to TrekCore and is well in line with the market it has cornered.

No problem.

Thanks!

One question: do the discs have a 'play all' feature? The lack of one on Trek discs up to this point drives me crazy. :scream:

So do we know if the CG Enterprise pops up in any other first season episodes?

Or was it just those couple shots in Farpoint (and I assume Arsenal of Freedom) with the saucer sep?
