Tomalak301: I understand your feelings about double-dipping (I feel the same way!), but I honestly don't think this qualifies. Here's why: CBS has put an extraordinary amount of effort into rescanning and reconstructing the entire series and rebuilding all the visual effects from the original film. It's not quite an all-new series, but I think it's pretty darned close. I think ST:TNG in HD represents a quantum leap in clarity, detail, and color. It reveals so much that was originally lost in the murkiness of standard-def video, yet remains faithful to the artistry of the show's original creators.

Oh, believe me, Mike, I'm already sold. The price seems reasonable, I'm just wondering what I do with the old sets. Keep them (And let them collect dust) or try to trade them in somehow. TNG is my favorite series of all of them, so maybe this is something worth paying for (And then getting a blu-ray player later if I need to). We'll see what happens.

Sell your DVDs and get whatever you can for them. If you don't have a Blu-ray player yet, they're incredibly cheap these days.

Where's a good place to sell the DVDs. They are in very good condition and that was something I was thinking about.

Yeah, there is shameless in your face money grab with double dipping, but they are others that have so much different that I don't feel it at all. And as long as I can afford it, I will be all over it.

Though in fairness Trek is one thing that I have purchased nearly every form of over the years, all versions of VHS, Laser Disc, DVD sets, Blu-Ray. The only things I didn't get was the two disc dvd release of TOS (as I knew they would due season sets), and the first HD release of TOS (as I figured based on content that Blu-Ray would win that battle).

Based on what we have seen so far, its a huge, huge improvement. I love it, and this is for the episodes I don't even like much...

IF money isn't a huge factor (which of course could be), might I recommend good will, or the equivilant.

And if you don't have a blu-ray currently, (and might purchase later) remember Christmas at least in teh US usually offers some really good pricing for players. I got my first one 2 years ago for $79.00SO I would think a great sale would get you some very reasonable prices.

God I had a VCR for over a decade before prices ever feel under $100. That's depressing.

Well, I went ahead and did it. I had some money from my birthday earlier this month and consider this a late birthday gift. Pre-order is in, I have it set for Store pick up, and I will be there sometime on Tuesday to get my copy. I honestly can't wait now.

Considering the next season will be out hopefully by christmas and I can ask for it as a gift, and then the next season after that maybe sometime in July, this might actually be good timing.

I don't know about any specific chain stores that might buy DVDs from you, but there are local movie/music/etc. type stores in my area where you can sell used DVDs for cash. Maybe there are stores around your area that do the same. I'd recommend looking through the phone book or something.

If you do find one, the money you'd get in return would probably depend on the sets' quality as well as how in demand they might be.

By the way everyone, when you get your sets... the Brent Spiner Easter Egg that Roger Lay, Jr. spoke of in the StarTrek.com interview can be found by popping in disc 6 and scrolling down to "Additional Data" (of course ) and then in the menu that pops up on the right, you select "Part 2: Launch" and hit the right arrow key.

If you are a purist and not wanting the 7.1 mix (which would play fine on a 5.1 speaker system)

The original 2.0 Stereo mixes are included too...but unlike The Next Level, they're presented in lossy Dolby Digital instead of DTS-HD Master Audio (which, if the trend continues, might inadvertently make The Next Level something of a collector's item).

There is a photo of the packaging for the discs themselves.

All of the original Episode Promos (0:30 each, SD) are on board, and they can either be viewed individually or before each episode is launched

Interesting that DVDtalk say the discs appear to be region locked. For anyone outside the US trying to get cheaper sets, this could present a problem.

I thought the general consensus was that the sets would be region free.

Region coding should never have been invented. Or if you must have it

Release on the same day or at the very minimum same week
Have exactly the same features

Yes with DVD there was the PAL/NTSC format, you could say there is a language issue as well but if that was the case you would have all English language speaking countries with 1 region as there is no issue with translations.

Then make sure to use the "I found a lower price" function. The more people use it, the more likely they'll lower their price to match.

Blu-ray still has the PAL/NTSC issue; European Blu-ray players have no problem with 1080i50/1080p25, but most US players refuse to play video at those framerates.

If I understand you correctly you are saying that for example European BR players can handle the US frame rate and display it correctly, what difference does that make to region coding?

Yes the other way around it might be an issue with a title from Europe going to America.

I don't trust DVDtalk's call on this. Paramount releases are typically region free, and HDmoviesource.com (usually extremely accurate with region coding) lists it as region free.

Oh, couple of boring questions:

1.) Are the menus 16:9 like in the sampler? Or are they pillarboxed too? (This is useful information for people with squarer projector screens!)

2.) The box it comes in, it looks like a normal (slim) Blu-ray case. Is it? How do six discs fit in there?
