Just thought I'd share a little experience I had with my two year old daughter last night that brought a smile to my face.

She's never seen any Star Trek of any kind before and last night she found my copy of the TNG Next Level sampler sitting on the dining room table. She grabbed it, opened it up and tried to pry the disc out all the while saying "Watch it! Watch it!"

I put the disc in for her and selected Sins of the Father. Her reaction to the opening scene of the Enterprise facing off with the BoP was to say "Wow-wee!" She had the same reaction a little later on when the Enterprise was orbiting Qo'noS.

Yup. She's a keeper.

That's awesome, a new Star Trek fan. You raised her right. ;)

Too cute! Let's hope my 18 month old has the same reaction. :)

Just had a look at the Blu-ray set specs on Amazon. IMHO there's some very strange disc management going on. Looks like Paramount has tried its best to pad out the content over as many discs as possible in order to jack the price up.

Seems pretty clear to me this set could've been 5 discs and a bit cheaper.

  • Introduction to the Series (1987)

  • Promo #1
  • Promo #2
  • Promo #3
  • Season One Promo
Disc Two:
Episodes

  • The Last Outpost

Somebody more knowledgeable needs to step in here, but wouldn't that have decreased image quality immensely? I mean, six episodes per disk seems pretty much already.

I did wonder this at first when I saw the second disk. 4 1/2 hours plus a zillion other language and subtitle tracks is probably pushing the disc capacity to its limit.

I think the average 2 hr feature film usually hits around somewhere between 25GB-30GB on Blu-ray, so 8GB per TNG episode on the second disk shouldn't present any real picture quality issues. The fans will soon tell Cash Bonanza Strikes if they don't like what they see.

The most episodes on a TOS Blu-ray disc was five in the season three set.

Aren't TOS episodes 50mins long as opposed to an average of 44mins for TNG?

With some quick maths, the 6 episode TNG disc would appear to exceed the running time of the 5 ep TOS disc by about 20 mins. I have no idea what impact that may have on picture quality.

Brain cell fried. :alienblush:

This seems like another conspiracy theory to me. I doubt the price is set depending on the amount of discs, or that customers judge prices depending on the amount of discs. People think in terms of "one season's worth of TV" plus "amount of extra features", not how many discs it's distributed over.

Clearly the picture quality wont be as pin sharp when we compare the grain between the sampler and the box set, but its still far superior to what we had before!

Yeah, I would have preferred seven discs with four episodes per disc like the sampler (similar to the approach used on DVD). The sampler was only filled to 90% capacity anyway (41.9 GB out of a possible 46.6 GB). "Farpoint" was 20.35 GB, "Sins" was 10.15 GB, and "Inner Light" was 10.07 GB. If they filled the discs close to capacity on the season one set, each episode could be nearly 9 GB... but I agree that they're probably on track to be more like 8 GB, which of course would be about 80% of the size of the episodes on the sampler.

Six episodes per disc would be pushing the bitrates down way too far -- more like 70% of the size of the episodes on the sampler.

Does anyone actually want grain as a by-product of a clean, clear, sharp image?

My pet hate watching anything on Blu-ray (mainly older films) is the amount of grain you get during dark scenes. I found the teaser disc to be objectionably grainy, especially during Farpoint.

10GB for 44 mins of HD is really over doing it IMHO and probably accounts for the excess grain. That's giving a bitrate well above the average BR movie release.

I actually do like grain, the more filmy textured look somehow adds to the atmosphere to me. Sins of the Father maybe looked a bit too coarse, but not to the degree where it reduced my enjoyment any.

As for "too high bitrate" ... if you want to soften, use a post-process filter in your player or TV set. The source being lower bitrate just to keep grain away is silly IMHO.

On the original camera negative, grain IS the image. So yes, I want it. :)

The more the merrier. A high-quality DCP (Digital Cinema Package) 2K or 4K at the theater has a maximum AV bitrate of 250 Mbit/s (they use JPEG 2000 compression for video and the audio is uncompressed LPCM).

Blu-ray has a maximum AV bitrate of 48 Mbit/s. But that's AVC, VC1, or less common now, MPEG2. I would like for them to push it as far as they reasonably can.

The number of discs does not effect the retail price, only Paramount's cost. As long as they can sell for above costs, the price of the set is determined by the consumer's willingness to pay and not the cost to produce the set.

Here's the Fathom Event trailer in case anyone's interested. There's a few new shots to see (in low quality):

(It will not be a high-quality DCP, by the way.)

My daughter is taking me as my Fathers Day present. Here it's playing on the IMAX screen.

You confirmed with the theater that it's playing on their IMAX screen? That seems unlikely. I'm guessing you're going here?:

It looks like on July 23rd, The Dark Knight Rises (2 hr 45 min) has a 4:50 PM show on their IMAX screen... so that should continue well beyond 7:30 PM that night... and there's another show at 8:30 PM. Even if it's not that specific theater, expect The Dark Knight Rises -- which opens on July 20th -- to occupy every IMAX screen across the country for several weeks. That's just the way IMAX books their movies, I'm afraid.

Sorry, I don't mean to be a killjoy... really, I don't. I just don't want your expectations to be that high, only to find out on the day that it's in one of their smaller auditoriums. I'm sure you'll enjoy yourselves, just don't expect IMAX quality (or size).
