Question for all: I plan on doing a series rewatch for season 1 on bluray, do other people want to as well? Should we all just do it on the same thread?

RAMA

Definitely count me in for at least seasons one and two. :techman:

Have purposely been avoiding most of those episodes for months now.

A quick guide to telling them apart ...

The physical model (6ft, but true for the 4-footer as well) has a double window in the upper left here:

Single on the CG model:

This one looks CGI too. http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/exclusive_images/Farpoint/Farpoint10e.jpg

I wonder if they were unhappy with the motion control of the two separate pieces and felt they needed to redo it in CGI to produce a smoother shot. What's also interesting is that it's the first indication that the CGI model can separate.

Nah, I reckon (99% sure) that is a shot of the model.

It is unfortunate we have lost another 6ft-er shot to CGI, because no CGI can look as good as the 6ft model when photographed correctly! I must assume the shot was lost when they raided the archives for Generations because the rest of the scenes appear to be the model.

I wish there could be a subgroup to TNG , for TNG-R, so all threads, about all details could be found there.

Why? There are only eight active threads, including this one, in the TNG forum today.

I think there's plenty of room for discussions about both TNG and TNG-R in here. :techman:

Could it be that shot of the Saucer sep is now "owned" by Paramount and not CBS? I bet that's why we got a new shot of the Bird of Prey in Sins of the Father, and I'd be willing to bet a pint on the fact that the Starbase in 11001001 is CG'd too.

Makes no sense to me. They'd have kept the Ent for SoF if it was just that.

True, but something tells me all the stuff made for the films is going to disappear from the series as it progresses. I'd just like to stress thats not me making a wink wink, but I really do think that.

I say this probably because those elements are missing because they were nicked from the movies. And they don't have access to the movies at CBS, at least not legitimately.

If that's the case, they hopefully use that model seen in the SOTL. It's probably Tobias Richter's anyway.

I agree, as I pointed out early on with the initial shot of the D/BOP, that shot used elements from ST III, and it seems to be a common theme for many shots now where CGI is not being used. Not sure if it a rights issue or a physical 'the footage isn't around' issue.

Mike Okuda would know!

The theory of Paramount owning the footage and not CBS seems to make sense. From a business standpoint, it would make more sense to keep footage like that with the movies since those are what they would assume they'd be more likely to go back to the film negatives to, whereas at the time they thought the TV show was done and wouldn't need the film elements any longer.

It would be interesting to hear if that's the true reason and, if not, what the real reason is.

Or both, for that matter. Since we’re dealing both with TSFS footage reused for the TV series and with TV footage reused for GEN, they may be two different problems.

Ya, another reason the CBS/Paramount Trek split bothers me. I was at Paramount of the time of the merger, and ironically at CBS at the time of the separation and it still bugs me!

And in all this time CBS has never green-lit a new Trek Animated series, to give all my TNG friends another chance to portray these great characters.
