I agree - the matte paintings and planets were amazing in TOS-R, all other things aside. The Menagerie had people in the background, little shuttles flying by when Kirk was in the office, etc. Everything just looked more realistic. The planets were just amazing! I loved it! I sincerely hope that's the kind of treatment TNG will be getting - realistic mattes, more realistic planets (weather patterns, blooms from their suns, reflections onto the ship, etc), and hopefully the monochromatic skies of the 'planets' will get some clouds and digital extensions (The Cage, in the Mojave with Pike and Vina on picnic).

Yeah it's kinda sad that the CG planets on any random Discovery Channel documentary now are a thousand times more realistic than the planets on TNG.
Hopefully the new versions will at least make them respectable.

Holy crap, no, why, just why? That exact shot was used in Generations and looked a thousand times better.
More CGI: http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/exclusive_images/Farpoint/Farpoint10c.jpg
The rest of the sep (as far as visible in the pics) is the physical model.
Here's the original shot used for Generations:

So they can't argue they lost it or that it wasn't good enough.

Or it was damaged during the use for Generations (they manipulated the original shot instead of a copy).I'm sure they had a reason, just very curious what it is in this case. One idea: They lost the neg after they pulled it from storage for Generations.
