^ That's their attitude towards Star Trek fans in general.

Case in point: the last movie.

You mean the one that more non-fans saw than fans?

I still doubt that. This message board alone is full of people who said they watched this movie 10-15 times in theaters when they watched Nemesis only one single time or not at all.

Those people only make up a fraction of the 36+ million tickets sold.

Well, it would be cool if someone could finally show me a breakdown to convince me otherwise, because I still think that mostly Trek fans saw it.

They don't release such figures normally, but you can get a sense of what ST fans' viewing habits are by the unscientifc poll we had here awhile ago on how many times people saw it. Even out of BB users, the number who saw it more than 5 times was about 5%.

Rob Burnett has implored me to get a Blu-Ray, so I may wind up breaking down and looking into getting a cheap one (as opposed to my main game plan and holding out for a PS3).

Used from 30. New from 70.

And if you're still holding out on getting a PS3 after 5 years...give up...you're not ever going to get it.

The math doesn't work...unless there are a TON more Trek fans than anyone is aware of...and if there is there wouldn't be a reason for a reboot in the first place.

An unscientific supposition on my part: I always went by the low figure of what core Trekkers may have spent on the least popular movie in the theaters..Nemesis: $67 million. That's about 8 million tickets or so in 2002. It sold 2 million plus in DVDs. ST09 would have sold 38 million or so..there are NOT 30 million more trekkers out there.

Mann Theatres did a recent promotion, showing various movies in IMAX for only $7.00, including JJTrek.

From what I've been hearing, this superfantasticspectacular movie that everyone just luuuuuuuuuuuuuuvs...has been playing to virtually empty theaters.

So much for long term fans of this thing.

So this lack of October 2011 IMAX success clinches it...

I guess this failure is the reason they also added 9 more locations to the lineup of theaters showing it.

^I agree. That is some very flawed reasoning on behalf of Mr. April, sorry. Repertory titles consistently do little to no business unless they are tied into a big promotion or holiday. We used to move prints of 'It's A Wonderful Life' and 'White Christmas' all over the country, and while the prints were in demand, the screenings were only as successful as the local promotions.

If they had done a series of Q&A's for the Imax JJTrek or other promotions with added content then maybe people would seek it out.

I really hope Paramount decides to include all the deleted scenes/alternate takes they may find and include them as a extras in the season sets. That in itself may sway some of those fans clamoring for a 16:9 release.

If by Trekkers you mean people who can remember every episode title in order, collect merchandise, etc..., I agree with you. But there are certainly 38 million people out there who like Star Trek stuff. Just stopped watching the movies, etc... the casual fan.

I really don't think this movie attracted a lot of non-fans (people who never cared for Trek at all).

That's probably true because there are a shit-ton of Star Trek fans but I think plenty of non-Trek fans saw the movie and enjoyed it.

How many of those became full-fledged Trek fans outside of an impulse buy of a DVD set or two? Very few, I'd wager.

TNG peaked at 11.5 million homes.

Avged 17-20 million viewers a week according to most sources.

I would agree that there are 38 million or more people who have watched or enjoyed trek at some point, but most are not Trekkers.

First post, and yes this is driving me nuts:

How do SO MANY Trek fans miss this? The announcement says
"Visual effects will not be upconverted from videotape, but instead will be recompositioned."

Over at trekweb there is a slew of comments about they wished they were redoing the FX?

Is this wrong?

Well it's right that the "effects" will need to be replaced, by which I mean phasers, shields, forcefields, and various other elements, but the original model shots of spaceships can be used. They were shot on film just like the live action scenes.

And actually the article doesn't say the effects will be redone. It won't be the first time a sub-editor has given an article an inaccurate headline.

Probably the same way you do: By not reading the thread they're commenting in. What they have negatives for and what they need to redo has been discussed to death in here. Other than the extent of the corrections they will have time to make, there aren't many open questions at this point.
