The OFFICIAL STNG-R general discussion thread!

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

I guess this also answers the aspect ratio question.
Meh...sort of? We only saw the CGI in 16:9, and that could have been framed that way only because the rest of the video was 16:9. The only character shot shown as 4:3.

That wasn't CGI Squiggy! I'm pretty sure that was the actual model shot! Damn, that was impressive. I know it's just two short scenes but it's world of difference to me. And I also believe this pretty much answers the aspect ratio question. it will be 4:3.

Yeah, it looked like the original footage to me too. I also retract my aspect ratio statement since we clearly got both aspect ratios in that teaser.

Indeed. I'm so used to how the model looked, I just assumed that the only way you could get that detailed and crisp a shot was from CG. I had no idea that's how good the model could look.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

The AR doesn't tell us much. We knew the series was generally framed for 4:3, but the ILM space shots for Farpoint were filmed more cinematically. They looked great in Generations.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

It's going to b e long wait for January 31st!

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

I wonder if they really are going to stick with the model once they get into the series. I can see reasons for it (cheaper, people won't complain about how replacing the effects was unnecessary), but there are enough episodes where the effects aren't up to snuff that I can see them going to CGI for the battle scenes at least.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

Original camera negative telecine transfer @ 10-Bit LOG 4:4:4 color sampling
according to the trailer.

Let's break down those specs for you techies:
Most likely it was telecined to state-of-the-art 'industry standard' Sony HDCAM SR tape.
The HDCAM SR VTR (video tape recorders) (The SRW-5000 & , SRW-5100, SRW-5500, SRW-5800 models) are capable of recording 1920x1080 log video information at 10-bit,
4:4:4 High Quality (HQ) mode.
880 Mbit/s mode is known as HQ "HQ" 4:4:4 option.
Sony's LOG recording mode is called S-Log. More info on S-Log here. Sony refers to it as S-Log: The Digital Negative

4:4:4 LOG video is compressed 4.2:1. from the 1.485 Gbit/s original data rate of SMPTE 292-M (This standard is usually referred to as HD-SDI)

END super geek technical specs.

I can see them sprucing things up a little. I wouldn't mind a mix of both.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

Will pick up the disc but I wish they had went with some other episodes.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

I'm also torn on new effects v.s recomposition. But going with originals is probably the best option. The only down fall for me is that the TNG effects (especially for the early seasons) will look substanially unimpressive when compared to the new TOS effects. In the end however, this honors the talented people who worked hard to make the show as good as it did back in the day. (are you listening George Lucus?).

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised that in a few years there will be a "special edition" that will include the option of viewing the shows with original effects or new CGI.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

YES! YES! YES!

I am so going to buy this.

Fucking WIN!

Have you seen that comparison shot on TrekCore?! This is so fucking outstanding!

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

So THERE it is!! Basically a lot of what we talked about is confirmed...the OFFICIAL thread is now OFFICIAL!

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

YESSSSSSSSSS OMGGGGG WEEEEEEEEEEEE

Thanks CBS & Paramount, this is brilliant.

They could charge $500 I'd still buy it, well done.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

The premiere. A Hugo winner. An Emmy winner for art design.

That's the rationale.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

That looks seriously impressive.

I haven't got round to getting Blu-Ray/full-on HDTV yet, but this is going to make resisting the temptation to upgrade much harder. The Enterprise looks beautiful.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

Farpoint, Best of Both Worlds and All Good Things would have been my choices.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

I was half-hoping there'd be some CGI shots to show some battle damage and all that...but using the original model shots in HD is great.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

CBS is, in fact, returning to the original film negatives, a mother lode of material encompassing 25,000-plus reels of footage, and editing the episodes together precisely as they were when they originally aired between 1987 and 1994. Visual effects will not be upconverted from videotape, but instead will be recompositioned. The freshly cut film will ultimately be transferred to high definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio. And all of the work is being done in conjunction with respected, longtime Star Trek figures Denise and Michael Okuda, who are on board as consultants.
Guess who....:)

I'm confused as to which aspect ration they will be using. However the cleaned up Enterprise shot above looks excellent. This sampler disc will be an excellent birthday gift.

Those would be the obvious choices. However if CBS/Paramount blew their wad all at once on those 6 episodes, you'd eliminate most of the market for future purchases since that's what EVERYONE wants.

This is just a taste. If you want BoBW, Yesterday's, AGT...shell out the bucks.
