The Official Influenza Thread

It's official. England and Wales are suffering (so far) the worst outbreak of 'flu since the millenium 'flu.

I find this oddly reassuring. I was proud to boast that while I've had a few colds and viruses over the years, I've never actually had 'flu. Till now.

I woke up with it in Saturday: cough, no voice and felt awful. On Sunday, I turned in to work to conduct carol singing at Christmas parties. Except I couldn't sing a note, and was burning up. By 7pm I had a fever the like of which I've not had in 30 years, and was vaguely delirious. (Ask the Misc mods - I made some weird notifies!) I vaguely recall a teddy bear bringing me herb tea. Still, if I'm going to hallucinate, nurturing teddy bears is the way to go!

Working on the principle that I can't possibly be the only one here using alcohol gel on my hands before I type, I thought a nice corner here where we can all sneeze and cough together, pass round bottles of linctus and sympathise with each other would be a relief after the party thread for those of us not up to partying.

Right now, I could make Mistletoe into a weapon of mass destruction!

I got the flu shot about a month ago, so here's hoping they picked the right strains. Feel better!

I had a dose of a "Winter Vomiting Virus" a few weeks ago.

5 Days of 100 degree temperature, the inability to eat and very VERY warm thighs (unsettling)... Oh, and yeah, the vomiting.

Bile is NOT pretty.

Oh and I gave it to the girl I'm seeing (on our first date!!!)

Hugo - wouldn't wish that feeling on his worst enemy

Hope you feel better, Kath.

DH is sick. His though, is the "nuisance cold" variety of illness.

'tis the season to catch germs. More people, more movement, more bugs.

Ugh.

Stay in bed when you can and keep warm and cozy!

Hugo, that sucks. As an NHS worker I have a healthy respect for the norovirus. A very nasty little sucker indeed. I hope you're feeling better.

T'Grinch, give DH my best wishes. Being sick over Christmas is horrid. I hope he's over the worst by Thursday.

And Mimic-with-the-vaccine? :p
(Seriously, I hope they have the right strain, too!)

I haven't had the flu for more than 15 years as I have the flu injection each year.

I guess one of the best things about being an Aussie is that we don't have to worry about the flu at Christmas time as it isn't flu season for us until mid-year.

My doctor did tell me once that people generally only get the flu about once every ten years and the rest of the time when they think they have the flu they really only have a bad cold.

I have never had flu either to my knowledge. Although I used to get colds very regularly, until I began taking a vit C tablet every day, and now I haven't had so much as a sniffle for 2 years.

I haven't had the flu in a few years

Aside from the occasional cold (which are never very bad), I haven't been sick in 2 years, when I got bronchitis for the first time. The last time before that was 3 years earlier when I had my tonsils removed.

Honestly, since I got my tonsils removed, I almost never get sick anymore.

I had a near miss on Friday after work with a severe head cold, shivers, fever, low appetite, upset stomach, and restless sleep. Strangely, it recovered by itself by Saturday night with not even a paracetamol. I'm now feeling much better. :D And it means I get to drive to my family for Christmas tomorrow.

My son and I had the stomach flu last week...it was awful!

We're good now though...hope you feel better!

mr trampledamage has his traditional "I'm on holiday" sickness - gets it everytime he stops work... Not quite the flu (he's had the flu shot too) but still annoying! Hopefully he'll feel better by Thursday.

Still, so long as young master trampledamage doesn't end up in hospital with croup, it'll be a better year than last year :)

Hope all the sick people recover in time to get sick from eating too much food on Christmas.

We've been passing around the sinus bug. I'm on my second round of antibiotics in 2 weeks. They gave me those new 4 day and now the 3 day packs. Not so sure I like them. But after a month and a half of off and on sinus trouble I'll try almost anything.

Hope everyone gets well soon!

When I get the flu it's usually in spring or summer for some reason. Last time I had it was over the weekend of my b-day last June. My b-day passed and I barely even noticed because I was in bed in a dead stupor the whole day.

I had the flu once when I was about 8, which turned into walking pneumonia. Haven't had more than a sniffle since 2003 that I recall though...

For a series of commercials for a flu remedy/treatment I thought the part of "the flu" was well cast (as an annoying family/member friend coming over to live/visit for the holidays) by Wayne Knight.

Call me kooky but I actually like having the flu.

not having to eat, sleeping all the time, being alone...

Why does everyone have to get a flu shot in November?

Why does the flu wait for winter to come 'round?

Seems like a pretty strange virus to me.

Everyone's inside, vents are circulating warm dry air drying out your natural defenses, viruses have a better chance of picking off someone in large groups of people hoarding together in warm places where lots of them are sneezing and coughing, handling the same things you will later and not washing their hands.
