I'm sorry about the ebook/electronic issue. Technology wise I know it can be done as far to be on parity with the paper version of your book.

I hate having to say this, I have a disability and have Cerebral Palsy. Back in 1997 I bought this huge copy of Star Wars Chronicles with the gold slipcover for over $100. I got it home and realized I couldnt hold it to enjoy it or look at the photos. I had to return it. One of my biggest problems is I cant lay my left hand flat. I feel stupid for saying this honestly.

I just wanted you to know why I was asking about an ebook and just feel left out of enjoying these books. Your's, John Eaves, it starts to add up sometimes. I just want to be able to support your efforts and not have to enjoy your book only by the way of random one off google images. I respect the fact that you dont want your works and/ or your effort to be stolen online. But I hope your publisher would reconsider not just for me but others as well to reach the widest audience as possible.
Just remember no matter what there are unsavory people online sellers selling the out of print Star Trek Encyclopedia for anywhere from $1200-$3000. I sincerely hope BillJ gives them hell too. Not everyone is a thief.

Don’t feel stupid and thank you so much for sharing your story! I had a heart transplant 5 years ago and for about a year and a half the medications I took made my hands shake so much it was hard for me to read or writes or do much of anything that required fine motor skills. So, while I don’t know exactly how you feel, I have an idea and I know how frustrating not being able to participate in things you want to.

If I find out anything more about the ebook situation I will let you know.

We could still get an e-book, there have been times where I've seen a book like this just announced as a hardcover, but then an ebook will eventually pop up too.

Thanks Aaron for your kindness and empathy. I'm so sorry to hear of your heart transplant and I hope as time goes on your condition keeps improving. Having Cerebral Palsy is a large part of who I am and I try to adapt and embrace it as much as I can. Please be assured that I am in no way trying to be dishonest or not genuine with you. But, I wanted to show you why I was motivated and passionate about having a readable ebook. I want to apologize to you and also Mr. David Mack too because I made a mistake between the responsibilities and rights of an author versus a publisher in the situation of the creation and control of an ebook in the digital realm. I truly appreciate your understanding because with the things I deal with in real life, I try to be the same as close as possible in the online realm. As Shakespeare says to thine own self be true.

Suffice it to say for some odd reason digital ebooks were on the rise between 2007 and 2013 and even though newer ebooks are made and sold more frequently then. The coffee table, art book, reference book seems to be overlooked more now as an ebook than a few years ago. This genre of books should be digitized if not for reference or preservation for the future. To JD too, I agree with fingers crossed.

It was an honor to meet you and correspond with you, and hope to do more in the future.

I agree. Unfortunately, this is something where a few individuals ruin it for everyone else. If I remember correctly what I've read over the years, there isn't a lot of profit in these kinds of projects, because they are usually of a limited interest.

The publisher is left in a bad spot, trying to protect what profitability there is versus making it available for everyone that wants to buy it.

I do hope these books eventually make it to digital formats for the people who have trouble handling the physical books themselves. Heck, I would probably buy copies digitally as well as the physical, because as I get older, I sometimes find the adjustable fonts very helpful.

Not doing an eBook is -- um, a choice. Honestly, reference books make most of their sales in eBook form these days, and yes, they're pirated, but the numbers they gain in sales by having an eBook (even factoring in piracy) are far greater than what they lose by not having one.

E-books are mighty profitable since no ink and paper involved. I haven't kindled a book where the layout stays the same, though I have bought such via the author or publisher, usually as pdf or, I think epubs? -- then one gets basically a facsimile of the book as it looks in "real" life. Those are, of course, more easily piratable/sendable than those sold and managed via the offical sources (i.e. Amazon), though I'm sure those are stealable too.

E-books are mighty profitable since no ink and paper involved.

Ink and paper are a very, very small part of the cost of making a book. In a large print run, economies of scale work out so that the printing costs are mere pennies per book, though it's costlier per unit for a small run. Most of the cost of making a book is labor -- the many hours of work put in by the writer, editor, copyeditors, proofreaders, typesetters, cover designer, cover artist, sales and marketing people, etc. That expense is the same for both print books and e-books.

I really wish more of the art book would be released as e-books. For one thing, they seem to almost aways end up as big hardcovers, which end up weighing a ton and can be kind of hard to handle. I do most of my reading at work or waiting for appointments, and most of these artbooks aren't really the kind of thing you can bring to places like that.
One other thing that's nice with the e-books is you don't end up with the page break in the middle of double page images.
So far the only ones I've found that regularly release as e-books is the Disney and Pixar ones. Some of the Marvel ones are available as e-books, but not all of them.

After all the page layout and development is done digitally or should be now, so releasing an ebook is another logical step.

Im glad that everyone in this thread realize as beautiful and detailed most art books are the high resolution photos on high quality thick stock paper. The thicker and heavier the books become. I agree with JD that what happens.

As for Star Trek, I hope more art books and reference books are released as ebooks because there are more than a few huge omissions:

-Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise
-John Eaves book on Designing the Enterprise
-ST TNG sketchbook for the movies
-2016 Star Trek Encyclopedia in 2 Volumes no out of print
-Returning to Tomorrow: The making of book on Star Trek the motion picture
ST DS9 companion book
ST Voyager companion book
ST the original series companion book

Its my hope that publishers will realize that once a book goes out of print only second hand sellers make and unreasonable amount of money, and the publishers and the authors lose income. If I was an author I would be upset beyond measure. To make 10 times the original amount on a work second hand? How is that fair to anyone? Authors? A fan? Etc. At least an ebook is low cost risk to release older works to a newer generation and lower the chances of high second hand prices.

In any event, my point to all of this is to support Aaron (Geekfilter) and his work on the Animated Series book. Im excited and I'm hoping his publisher will see the value and worth for an ebook.

I can't really see them going back and releasing the older stuff at this point, but I am pretty pissed we didn't get an e-book of the new John Eaves art book that just came out a few months ago.
