The Official "BALLS TO WINTER!" Thread

Re: The Offical "BALLS TO WINTER!" Thread

I don't mind cold weather (actually, I enjoy the dressing up opportunities it offers), but I certainly really dislike long nights & short days. I'll be delighted when Spring returns.

Re: The Offical "BALLS TO WINTER!" Thread

I've liven in MA my whole life. Northern Central Massachusetts, where I grew up (I currently live in Southeastern MA), just got hit with an ice storm that killed power for 1.5 million inhabitants. Nine days later, some are still without power. We get several snowstorms a year, with >2ft per storm the usual.

AS SOON AS I CAN, I'M MOVING TO FUCKING TENNESSEE.

:)
I don't know about Tennessee specifically, but the places in the Midwest that I lived (Indiana and Missouri) were much worse, weather-wise, than Massachusetts. Summers were hotter and winters were colder...I remember that on one memorable winter's day in Missouri, our doors were all literally frozen shut. On another, I sunk up to my waist in snow on a poor step. Admittedly, this was over a snow fort that my brother and I had dug out...but it was completely filled in with no visible sign of its existence. For the most part, I laugh at the concept of bad MA winters.

Which doesn't make shoveling out the driveway suck any less. It just means that the walls at either end aren't as tall, except near the bottom.

As for me, I hate snow. I like snowscapes, and I tend to really enjoy being out in a light snowfall, but once it's down on the ground, I just want it gone. It's cold, wet, and gets everywhere. Without it, winter would be much more tolerable.

EDIT:
Something tells me I would be comfortable there, or at least be able to tolerate it. After all, my first reaction to Garak's complaint about the station being too cold in "The Wire" was, "It's a public facility--OF COURSE it's too cold! They ALL are!"
Are you kidding? After coming in from the outside in winter, it's ridiculously hot in any public building. I particularly hate stores, because you can't take your coat off, so you just sit there, sweating and feeling miserable...and it makes it just that much worse when you get back outside.

Re: The Offical "BALLS TO WINTER!" Thread

I cannot come up with even one thing about winter that I like.

Re: The Offical "BALLS TO WINTER!" Thread

Better the cold than the heat. You can always put on more clothes, but most people oppose me getting nekkid when it's bloody hot. You can easily be comfortable in minus 30 degree weather if you're properly dressed, but there is no way to be comfortable at 50 degrees. Not possible.

Re: The Offical "BALLS TO WINTER!" Thread

I like snow days. In January. Where they belong.

Fucking global warming. Goddamn climate change.

?!

What I can't stand are stores in the summer...especially the grocery store. I dread having to walk past the freezer cases when I've been wearing short sleeves for the outside weather. That cold air just hits me like a slap in the face.

At least in the winter, certain places (like Cracker Barrel) have a fireplace. I love getting the table that backs right up to the fire...that's heaven right there. :)

We don't have AC in my house except in a couple of rooms, so it's a relief to go into a store with AC in the summer and just bask in the awesome coldness.

That said, I think that most establishments set the thermostat too far both ways in summer and winter. The worst was my dorm in winter though. Most people that I know kept their windows open a crack so that they didn't swelter.

Well crap I was so distracted by the cold and misery that I misspelled the word "official" in the thread title.

Is that fixable?

Re: The Offical "BALLS TO WINTER!" Thread

Let it be a testament to the ass suck that is winter.

Are you skinny, Bears? Skinny people often suffer the cold more.

I'm skinny, and if I ever get cold, it's saps my ability to enjoy anything. All I really want, all I can really focus on, is wanting to feel warmer. So I do feel the cold more strongly than most people I know.

I make sure that I keep myself warm, by regular intake of warm drinks, warm food, use of warm clothing, and keeping my house adequately warm.

Although funnily I do prefer the winter season more than the summer. Being tucked up in bed all cosy on an evening and seeing the frost outside, just feel nice to me. So I am happiest at this time of year. :)

So go run a nice hot bath with a few drops of relaxing lavender oil in it.
Then make yourself a big mug of tomato soup and some fresh crusty bread to dunk in.
Then stick a hot water bottle in your bed so your feet don't get cold and keep you awake as you're trying to fall asleep.

Respond to pain with self-indulgence. Enjoy the winter! :)

I am on the scrawny side so I do tend to be colder than most. I've got the bath ritual down, and I've been making soups in my crockpot to keep my core warm. Tomato soup sounds like my next project.

And I always find excuses for self indulgence. 8)

Maybe I'd enjoy winter more if I lived in place that got a dusting of snow here and there. Fresh snow is a beautiful sight. The misery happens when you have to spend months living your life around it.

California has floods and mudslides in the winter that cause a lot of damage and pain. I guess that's our not-very equivalent to blizzards and outages, heat shortages, etc.

Go back and edit the original post. In the title field, you should be able to make the change without a moderator's help.

I'm so excited that we're not having a snow day today that I'm going in a whole 5 minutes early! See ya after work!
