The Official and Very Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thread

Looks like they're just unfolded. His arms come from a lamp, usually they're folded at the elbow and locked in place.

I'm talking two struts left and right. I built a Crow about ten years back so I'm very familiar with how he goes together.

Old!Crow had arms that were one strut wide amd two struts deep, with a single foam pipe insulator on the rear strut of the bicep and the front strut of the forearm. New!Crow has double the number of struts, with two struts side by side as well as two front and back. There's now two foam pipe insulators on the rear struts of his bicep, and it appears two on the front of his forearm as well.

Basically, old!Crow used four struts in total to build his arm, new!Crow has eight.

Edit: For comparison, here's a promo pic for the new series using the old design:

I see it now. I'm viewing it on my phone. The hockey mask might be slightly different too.

I wonder if Cambot has a completely new design. He went through three different looks during the original 1988-1999 run and ended the show as a spherical, hovering 'Bot. It's such a simple and elegant design that I wouldn't be surprised if they kept the spherical shape and just refined it and added new details.

MST3K is in line to get the LEGO treatment; their Kickstarter-style Ideas page (where the LEGO Doctor Who, Big Bang Theory, Ghostbusters and Back to the Future sets all got launched) are well on the way to gaining the 10,000 supporters needed to get the toy company's review board evaluation.

IF it happens, we'll get Joel, Mike, the Bots, ALL the Mads (and potentially the new cast) and a Satellite of Love with bridge, movie screen and all six sliding doors in between. :adore:

It wouldn't be complete without the inclusion of both a Lego Torgo and Mr. B Natural! Knew your father's Lego sets, I did!

I wonder is Crow's arms have been redesigned for more involved puppeteering? True, Crow did some things with his arms in the original run, but maybe now we'll see him do more.

I just feel a bit silly not having noticed this given I have an authentic replica.

The recent Kickstarter update implied that puppets could do more than the originals.

Given Adam Savage has been mentioned as a mechanical engineering consultant, we may see some dang impressive "manipulation"

I wonder what will be the "backstory" for the 'Bots in this series? Are Gypsy, Crow and Tom "duped" into boarding a new S.o.L? Or, given we've already seen dozens of duplicate Toms in the original series, will these be "new" units? I can see a scenario in which Jonah stumbles across a message from Joel who, learning another hapless sap has been captured, sends him instructions how to build new 'Bots to help keep him sane. His efforts are darn close to the originals, but minor differences (new "chip" technologies, etc.) lead to the 'Bots having slightly different voices and personalities.

I know, remember the opening credit mantra, but even the original series developed its own "narrative", "casual" as it may have been.

Joel had said he wanted the original voices to make cameos. It's possible that the bots are new versions or builds based on the originals. The originals should still be living with Mike, unless they got bored after 20 years.

Something I had almost forgotten about, but a friend of mine actually tried to purchase the rights to MST3K a long time ago.

I'm not sure if it was him being naive, or thinking since they weren't doing anything with it (at the time), they wouldn't mind selling it. He contacted them, and got a polite no, still got pretty far I thought.

It was a group of us interested, but we were all online friends at the time. I'm not sure how far it would have gotten if he did manage to get the rights to the show, but I remember the idea was to call it "Mystery Science Theater 4000" And it would be about a guy on the run from a bounty hunter who stumbles across the Satellite of Love and releases the bots from stasis (I'm not sure if we ever talked about how they got from the last episode to being back on the ship).

It was a fun idea, but I'm not sure if it was ever more than just random musings from a group of online friends.

The voice casting is uncanny. He's really channeling the Trace version of the character here. (Which I like; his was my preferred take.)
