The Official and Very Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thread

It was an odd choice to have the captain look like Santa Claus.

True, but it lead to a lot of hilarious riffs. :guffaw:

"What of the children and their toys?"
"Leah, you're getting a lump of coal."
"I'll show you where my elves are working night and day!" (in the starship basement, no doubt ;))

According to the Kickstarter page, filming has begun. They've already started on the theater segments and were about to film some host segments. One of which is a song about movie monsters.

Probably my favorite Torgo segment involves Dr. Forrester growing frustrated with the satyr's glacial pace. He grab's the minion's jacket from behind and starts to hustle him from the room, much like a bouncer would do. Torgo's "theme" suddenly increases tempo to match his ushered gait.

I don't know why, but the sped up music of that sequence gives me the giggles.

The new season premieres on Netflix on April 14th!

And a cast photo on the Satellite of Love bridge set has just been released, a picture that includes series creator and original host Joel Hodgson! WE HAVE MOVIE SIGN!!!

Interesting twist for Gypsy. Rather than "rising" into frame, her "neck" trailing down, she's descending into the shot. I wonder if that will be her "default" pose for this new series, or do they has two (or more) puppets), one posed like this and another in her "classic" configuration, each used according to the needs of a particular scene?

Felicia Day looks so cute in that picture.

I'm so excited this is coming back. I know Joel is no longer the Host, but I wonder if he'll pop up on camera at all?

Patton Oswalt gets to play the son of TV's Frank in a revival of MST3K.

What a time to be alive.

It's interesting reading through this thread again. First we simply discussed our favorite episodes, riffs, host segments, characters, etc. Then I relayed something I read via "Satellite News", verifying with "Sampo" that i had not misunderstood, a crazy notion that Joel might revive MST3K.

Then came the announcement of the KickStarter, followed by a flurry of posts over the next several weeks as we watched the donation ebb and flow. would Joel reach his minimum goal? Would the project reach the next tier to make 6 episodes instead of just three? Would they get the money to record nine? Then during those last hours, the crew not only reached the "hoped for" goal, but exceeded it enough to allow the filming of 14 episodes!

Followed was a relatively quiet period, interrupted by tantalizing announcements about the developing production. The new host/"test subject", the new puppeteers, the "Mads", new 'Bot designs, hints of the new SoL, production designers, the possibility of celebrity cameos. Finally, the news that NetFlix would present the new series. And now, at last, a premiere date.

When this thread started, June 2015, any notions about a series revival were just idle fanwank fantasies. Now, an honest of Mogg series is just 7 weeks from its premiere, and several of us actually played a small part in that revival! If I partook of "recreational substances", I'd suspect this situation were just a chemically induced hallucination. But I don't, so this must be reality...unless I'm suffering the onset of dementia. :wtf:

Tom Servo looks different. His arms are curved like there's something inside the springs, normally they just dangle. Although early on they had a mechanism that allowed them to go up and down that never fully worked. One of the hover trains is crooked. But that could be an accident, they come lose all the time.

Crow looks about the same. But I've never built one, so it's hard to be familiar with all the details.

Gypsy doesn't look any different in this photo save for her being suspended from the ceiling of the set. I can't detect any differences in the flashlight used for her eye and the last puppet of her from the Sci-Fi Channel run that ended in 1999.

Really looking forward to this. I read somewhere that Reptilicus is one of the movies they're riffing, and that should be particularly hilarious.

Crow's arms are huge. The old design had smaller hands and a single strut making up his bicep. I'd say it's actually a bigger change than the one to Servo. Both are probably in service to the idea Joel put out that the bots might have functional arms this time.

Looks like they're just unfolded. His arms come from a lamp, usually they're folded at the elbow and locked in place.

Gypsy might have a new eye. The head looks roughly the same. Somewhere in my parent's attic is the exact car seat used to make her head, they got it when I was a baby. One day I'm going to find it and build her.
