The Official and Very Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thread

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

Off to see Rifftrax Live: Santa Claus and the Ice Cream Bunny tonight. At the last live event, they billed this as the "director's cut" version, with a newly-found middle story instead of the inexplicable Thumbilina short in the original riffed version.

And instead an inexplicable Jack and the Beanstalk story/short in the middle. ;) This time with the "golden goose" being a foil-wrapped picnic ham.

"Last Clear Chance" is one of their best shorts.

Also really like Century 21 Calling.

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

I'm rewatching the Mexican Santa Claus this weekend. In it's own unique ways it's as funny and memorable as Martians and has a dark and sinister edge that the 1964 American classic doesn't.

The opening musical numbers by kids from different nations and continents are both hilarious and groaningly offensive.

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

At least with SCCTM you get a sense of the cast and producers having fun, knowing full well what a ridiculously silly movie it is. The Mexican version is just plain weird in a lot of ways, and hilariously so. Those kids apparently don't remember Earth since they live in the Christmas station and have to ask Santa about it. :p

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

Good point. "What do they eat down on Earth?"

Didn't you come from there? You're barely old enough to be in elementary school, but you've already forgotten what people eat in the country or culture where you were born?

Apparently the North Pole is so cold and isolated that it eventually destroys the brain cells and memories of everybody under the age of ten. :)

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

Or that Catholic War Veteran Santa abducted them as babies or something, with Merlin's help. Santa's robotic reindeer and the weird facelike console thing he uses to spy on Earth are rather creepy too.

Tom Servo: "That is a mouth, isn't it?"

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

The KickStarter has just passed the 4.4 million mark meaning nine (9) episodes are guaranteed!

While it will be a major challenge to collect that last 1.1 million which will guarantee a season of 12 episodes, it's possible they'll do it. If you watch the "tote" now, you can see the number climb every few seconds. I suspect a couple of anonymous "deep pockets" will help during these last 36 hours (at the time of this post, obviously).

Just providing an encouraging "heads up".

Sincerely,

Bill

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

Sometimes that last amount comes rolling in at the last minute and there's enough time left if the right donors contribute. At this point nine new episodes would be more than enough to get me excited, but if they can pull off the whole 12 then it'll be more impressive to a cable channel or a streaming service like Netflix to pick up and fund a full season of the show.

I hope Joel and the gang reach their goal.

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

Joel announced that he's trying to work out a cameo from Mark Hamill who is a fan and donated to the Kickstarter.

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

I'm impressed with the progression the KS has made and kudos to Joel for being so great at keeping it active and updated.

I even increased my own pledge.

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

I'm thrilled with the various artists attracted to this project. The creators of "Steven Universe" and "Adventure Time". Even Adam Savage of MythBusters as an engineering consultant! I rather like the concept of a "power loader" (ala "Aliens") to transport a puppet version of Prof. Bobo around the set, the "loader" actually a costume for an unseen operator. That's a very clever idea! That "elevation" type illustration for the S.o.L. bridge makes me think of the "pilot house" for Geoff Harper's Nautilus in Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". It's the stacked "plating" and the dome shaped windows. (It's not clear that is the final design or just one possibility.) The update listing the artists states they might incorporate some forms of animation. Interesting...

Sincerely,

Bill

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

Well, they "only" have to raise under another million dollars in the next day or so to meet their ultimate goal. The KS page may say they're at $4.5m but there's backer expansion awards that've been purchased that do not go towards the final total on the main KS page. So they may actually be closet to $5m.

I've lived long enough to see new Star Wars movies, a new Star Trek TV series and the return of MST3K. My old Nineties nerd card just got repunched and it feels awesome.

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

They've unofficially passed the 5.5 million mark for 12 episodes. I say unofficially because that includes the $475,000 they've raised outside of Kickstarter, and the page graphic and official announcements haven't been updated yet to show the new total.

Next goal: $5.9 million for a 13th holiday episode.

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

Let's all celebrate this news by rocking for the Holidays!
