Spoilers The Nus Braka appreciation thread

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.

I wasn't initially impressed with Nus Braka in the first episode as some of his choices were confusing. After all, why would Caleb hate Nus for the fact he'd fed her mother? Yeah, it got his mother and him separated but the Federation is a much more obvious target. Plus, he was also incredibly incompetent and got his ship destroyed (driven off?) by a bunch of cadets in "Kids These Days"

This obviously goes out the window in "Come Let's Away" where instead of an incompetent fool, he manages to outsmart all of Starfleet and steal massive amounts of experimental weaponry. I also liked his utter contempt for the Federation and am interested in why he feels that way. I think his attitude must be very common in the Burn and may relate to his speech during his trial.

He doesn't deny he murdered someone, he says he was motivated by stealing food to feed a starving woman.

What do you think of Nus?

Added a spoiler tag to the thread and although it‘s obviously not a big spoiler I decided to leave the “Nustopher” name reveal for those actually watching “Come, Let‘s Away”. ;)

I love Paul Giamatti and he‘s obviously enjoying the scenery chewing, but right now, after two appearances, I actually still lean more towards him being somewhat miscast. In my eyes Giamatti is more cuddly teddy bear, neurotic weirdo or nervous intellectual. But hardboiled pirate and criminal mastermind? I don‘t know.

The character of Braka though is interesting, and I appreciate the more grey tones they gave him. I wonder if there‘s still more to learn about his backstory.

I've always thought that Giamatti brought a certain menace or malevolence to many of his roles. A capacity for emotional violence, certainly.

I just want to know if they're letting him ad-lib his dialogue.

It was established that Nus Braka isn't a pirate alone but controls an entire sector of space. So he's more like the Emerald Chain's leader. Which means he's closer to those Afghan warlords that were able to fight the Taliban. The Federation isn't exactly the United States either. They're more like the governments struggling against the cartels in various nations.

Nus Braka comes into his own in the latest episode. I'm happy to see Paul Giamatti given some real meat to work with, and I'm excited to see the next stage of his feud with my beloved Nahla. I love to hate this Klingarite mofo.

There's an interesting consistency to Nus' arguments that I didn't notice initially but he is actually furious with the Federation for their attitude to him in Episode 1. He robbed a food ship to feed a starving mother (and possibly others) but the Federation treats it as just a sign of him being a degenerate with little regard to the circumstances that drove him to it.

And his plan only works because they assume Nus Braka is a disgusting criminal when they ignore all the hints that he's actually incredibly well educated and cultured (he makes references to Shakespeare, The Sound of Music, and medical terminology that they don't really pay attention to). Basically, the Federation keeps judging the people by the standards of a society that isn't driven by desperation and he's offended by it.

Connor and Dominic host Paul Giamatti on the d-con chamber tomorrow.

Nus Braka is a much more compelling character when he stops chewing the scenery and drops the facade. I like Paul Giamatti as an actor, and clearly he's enjoying this role.

You'd think that would come up in any medical exam. What with Nus being a Klingon-Tellerite hybrid.

Well, I said sometime. Because of their connection. It's like the feeling. Even if he doesn't, they should have some kind of special relationship before. or at least Caleb's mother.

I doubt he is but I think Nus and his mother were in a relationship.

Yes, that's what I think when I watch the 1st episode. Nus Braka is not the type of charitable person. So how would he feed the mother and son in episode 1, unless he had some kind of special relationship with Caled's mother. But then, he was betrayed by Caleb's mother.

It's pretty clear in episode 1 that Nus, Caleb and Anisha have a relationship.

So the question is why she betrayed him at that moment. I think for a man like Nus Braka to steal the food from Federation and kill someone to feed a woman, It showed that he has a feeling to her, maybe even a love interest. So why did she betray him? That's a question in my mind.
