The noticeable lack of Leonard Nimoy

MisterPL

Commander
Red Shirt
I'm sure fans probably missed him in the latest trailer (though I haven't seen anyone mention it). But to general audiences, I'm sure the appearance of Nimoy or anyone else from the franchise would not compel them to give what appears to be a reboot a chance.

Will TPTB use Nimoy at all in ads for this movie?

It's almost CERTAIN Nimoy will be doing tons of interviews before the movie comes out, so I doubt they're going to keep it a secret for that long.

Personally though, I'd like it if we didn't see him at ALL until he's on the big screen.

I'm waiting for some kids to turn around and be amazed how they managed to find some old dude who looks so much like Zachary Quinto.

This was the unveiling of the film for the general public, not geeks like us who can list fifteen or more cast members.
It could be they figured having Nimoy in it would confuse Joe Moviegoer. Most people know Nimoy as Spock. Seeing him in the trailer with white hair and such may get Joe Moviegoer to think, "Is this a sequel?" He may even wonder if the younger guy in blue with pointy ears is Spock's son.
Also, sadly, having Nimoy in the trailer gives it a link to the past that could be baggage when the goal is to make this seem fresh. Joe Moviegoer could think it's "just another" Trek movie and they just didn't show Shatner and the others. Truly Star Trek XI.

Yeah you couldn't really show Nimoy without taking the time to explain what the heck he's DOING there, and that wasn't really the purpose of this trailer.

I can't wait to see him though. It's hard to believe it's been 17 years since he last played Spock.

(Well, unless you count those radio dramas with Spock and Q, when he was out of makeup)

I love closure.

He looks great. Better than seeing Indy back, I have to say.

About the only other thing that could send geek chills up my spine like that would be a shot of a 60-year-old Mark Hamill in Jedi garb igniting a lightsaber for a Peter Jackson-helmed Star Wars sequel trilogy trailer.

Anyway... glad they threw Trekkies a bone.

What's so odd about it is that it's up at some news site, and not even available at the Apple site or the movie's official site. (I wanted to see a better quality version...none there.)

It's almost like AICN somehow got ahold of a few frames of film with Nimoy, and re-edited the trailer themselves.

Almost, unless you notice that the links found at the bottom of the AICN article...

...don't go to AICN at all.

As mentioned, I've been at the official site for the movie. The version available there isn't the one with Nimoy.

Are those links to the official movie site? If not, isn't it odd that Paramount would put them up somewhere else?

I knew what you meant, and it's been commented on elsewhere that the updated version was not (and apparently still isn't) available via the startrekmovie.com/apple download pipeline.

No, it appears to something entirely separate from the official movie site. What the deal is, whether Abrams & Co. had anything directly to do with it and who else might be responsible/involved are things I could only make a guess at. Inside Paramount is all I know for sure, but if you strip off the Star Trek-specific bits and do a Google search for the rest of the URL, you find links for downloading trailers for movies like Indy 4, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Sweeney Todd and Beowulf, so it's probably Paramount's central distribution/download point for official trailers.

Edit:

It occurs to me to wonder whether this might be the same thing a couple of Paramount employees leaked descriptions of to AICN before the trailer hit the theaters. Hmmm...

Edit, again:

Maybe not. One of the descriptions name-drops Leonard Nimoy, but gives no details. The other doesn't mention him (or Old Spock) at all.

I just don't think the lack of Nimoy in some versions of the trailer is a big deal. I mean, I'm glad he's in the film, but let's face it - that is really for us existing fans.

And once again, this movie cannot be about us. It needs to draw in new fans - kids who might not even know nor care who Leonard Nimoy is.

I like the trailer, myself - even the version without Nimoy. Gotta warm up to Pine and Quinto anyway...and to me there is no time like the present.

After watching the trailer a few times now, I'm actually alot more impressed with Chris Pine than I thought I'd be.
