The Nostalgia Critic: Odd Numbered Trek Films

Nemesis put the kibosh on the whole even/odd theory. Already, the idea that all the odd numbered films sucked was a crock of shit (granted, some are sub-par), but at least up until Nemesis the even numbered Treks had all been good if not great.

Um, no? Sorry, but Angry Video Game Nerd revolutioned the online video reviewing.

Snark aside, I guess I was referring to movie-specific reviewers. Rolfe might have started earlier, but I feel Walker really streamlined the concept into how we know it today. Kinda like how Doom kicked off the FPS genre, but GoldenEye redefined it. YMMV

1 minute of that annoying voice was all I could take......

And to add to the discussion, I don't think the even movies are much better than the odds. TMP and TFF are both extremely underrated, TWOK is extremely overrated, and NEM which is an even numbered film is pretty mediocre. This whole even/odd rule is total rubbish.

yes, the even/odd thing is crap, as TSFS, GEN, NEM, and STXI all show to some degree.

As to the review, I mostly agreed with it. Looking at TMP as a casual reviewer and not a fan, you'd say it was slow and that much of it is watching special effects shots.

I'm curious as to how he'll approach TSFS. TSFS is generally regarded either as good or at least mediocre. I'm not sure how it's going to provide enough material for him to make fun of, unless he's just going to be unfair to it to make the "odd number" thing work.

I'm a huge fan of the Nostalgia Critic. I generally find his reviews pithy and amusing. A couple even edge into the area of "pocket masterpieces" (yes, Moulin Rouge, I'm looking at you!)

The Moulin Rouge piece was great. (I'm also a big fan of the "The Room" review.)

RE: sonak

He'll probably poke fun at things here or there, but Walker will generally give credit where credit is due if a movie is enjoyable and isn't that bad. Re: His Commando review.

I prefer James Rolfe's movie reviews more, I know some don't like his Angry Video Game Nerd persona because of how vulgar it can be, but I dig those too.

I like both Rolfe and Walker's movie reviews - they just have different styles.

When Rolfe does one, he generally takes a more serious angle, like most mainstream movie reviewers do. Walker's reviews, on the other hand, are generally one part review and two parts humor.

Glad to see he said it wasn't really that bad. But then, like someone already said, he'll gladly give credit where it's due.

Also happy that he didn't criticize Robin Curtis. I always preferred her over Alley.

Eh. This was one was actually only "okay" for me. Normally the NC has a good dose of critical review peppered with jokes, but it seems like this week his reviews are filler rather than actual critical reviews. I expected it with TMP, because the film has lots of nothing between it's dialogue and reaction scenes, but TSFS is chock full of moments worth discussing. Hopefully STV will be better.

Didn't agree with his criticism of the Pon Farr scene. It wasn't meant to be sexy, and to expect it to be so is missing the point. It's like a review I saw of Nemesis which complained about how tame the scene between Riker and Troi was. What, for the few seconds before it turned into a mind-rape?

Otherwise, a fairly solid review, if not as amusing as most of his work.

TSFS, just in passing, was a critical and box office success. I well remember standing in line for the second screening and listening to the exiting viewers from the first babbling excitedly about how this one was "the best ever!" I thought, and still think as it happens, that TSFS is a far better film than either WOK or TVH, but that is a matter of opinion. (Actually, I bloody DESPISE TVH, but that's for another post)

You are my friend. :)

Yeah, the review wasn't great and certainly not near as good as most of Doug's other work. But I think this series is less about "reviewing bad movies" and more about judging if the "odd curse" holds any water. But, as expected, there's also not a lot to go on when it comes to making fun of TSFS other than maybe nit-picky stuff or griping on some of the cheap sets and the bar scene with the "Genesis?!" alien obviously trying to be like the Cantina in Star Wars and emulate Yoda with the broken-English. I'm not sure the "fingering" scene was meant to be "sexy" either but just part of Vulcan foreplay, I mean they are beings suppressing their emotions. It's not like they're going to go after one another like animals.

But, next week the TFF review should prove to be interesting.

I have to agree with the Nostalgia Critic, TSFS isn't a bad film at all; which says a lot given how much of TWOK it undid.

One point I have to disagree with is on Kruge. It's true that he doesn't have the same presence as Khan but he's a ruthless villain and reminds me of Stalin.

Whenever I hear "Genesis!" all I can think of is Sega Genesis.

"Instead of tiny, say Takei."

This review was pretty much as expected. It wasn't so much funny in the badness, but more "yeah, that's amusing, I guess." Given that the Trek odds go downhill from here, I expect his next reviews to be on par with the typical NC reviews.

"C" maybe "B-" review of STIII. Not a bad review, but it felt like he was fishing for stuff to get comedy out of. And, like the TMP review, too short.

Now TFF, he should have a gold-mine on his hands.
