Again, the argument was that she wouldn't become a series regular, not that she wouldn't make cameo appearances.

The impression I got from the course of the conversation was that some were suggesting that simply because Mulligan is hot right now and Oscar nominated that this makes her off-limits to even a guest appearance,

Well, I was the one who brought up the state of Mulligan's career, and I'm telling you that I brought it up to shoot down the idea someone else floated about her becoming a series regular, not to shoot down the idea of a guest shot.

No, there's not a cats chance of her coming back as a regular, more is the pity. Before her career took off she was my first choice for the new companion though.

Still, look on the bright side - if she had, we would never have had the wonderful Karen Gillan...and we still might get a Sally Sparrow one-off at some point.

I'm open to any kind of companion, except I would prefer them to at least have a strong personality and not be a romantic interest for the Doctor. More often than not, I find friendship relationships to be more interesting and fun to watch play out.

I can't believe I didn't think of this before, and I doubt the Moff would consider this, but Louise Brealey who plays Molly Hooper in "Sherlock" would make a wonderful new companion for the Eleventh Doctor!

She's in the 4th Doctor Lost Story - The Foe From The Future that Big Finish recently released in a companion type role and is excellent.

As far as we know, so far, it could be the first or the next to last episode. All we know, is sometime during the season we will change companions, I believe

Normally, I'm against revisiting a character like Reinette, whose dramatic power in "The Girl in the Fireplace" comes from her death. But Sophia Myles is just such an engaging, charismatic actress, I find myself hoping that she'll play the new companion one way or the other (be it as as Reinette or another character).

Figures, although I am weary of the head writers/showrunners talking a good game only for the proverbial ball to drop in the actual episodes written. We shall see, and I hope the Doctor is not emotionally crippled by the loss of yet another companion he has grown fond of.

I mean, personally, I find Sophia Myles so attractive that I'd find it hard to imagine she wouldn't have excellent onscreen chemistry with Smith, but I might be biased.

Indeed, David Tennant and Catherine Tate are a prime example. Billie Piper is perhaps easily called more attractive than Catherine Tate, but I'd say Catherine Tate made a far better team with David Tennant than Billie Piper did. I'm sorry that Freema Agyeman didn't come to mind, but that just lends itself to the point about chemistry, I suppose.

I find Moffat's conflation of the next season and the 50th-anniversary in that quote quite interesting. I guess he's trying to damp down the expectations for 2012.
