The Next Captain

Bry_Sinclair

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I think that for the next series the Captain should be homosexual, and definately played by a gay actor/actress.

Anyone else out there agree?

I'd like to see a half-human/half-Vulcan female captain myself. Perhaps one that favors her human side more than her Vulcan side at times...

I wouldn't have a problem with a gay character or a gay actor but it is generally better just to cast whoever the best actor for the role is. Patrick Stewart isn't French, William Shatner isn't American and, er, Leonard Nimoy isn't Vulcan.

No! If we have a gay main character, their sexual orientation should be portrayed as incidental and not central to their character.

^ make her gay too.
It wouldn't even matter, because either way, her love life would be the least interesting thing about her, IMO. Save that stuff for another character, if you must--perhaps a junior officer under her command...

Why indeed?

I think the next Captain should be a compelling character that I want to spend an hour watching once a week.

Absolutely, not.
First, I do not support the gay agenda to put gay in everything.
It's excessive.

Second, Trek already has a negative gay stigma among the teenage, black cultural and hispanic cultural groups and conservative groups which dominate the American viewership and would not serve it's popularity.

Third, The Gay culture isn't the same sort of human rights issue as black and women were in the beginnings of the 20th century. Gays weren't prevented from voting, paid reduced sallary for who they were, suppressed for 400 years or in the case of women 2,000 years, whole towns were burned and massacred for being gay, Their culture wasn't sabotaged by taking their language and tradition. Their education wasn't continually robbed from them because of racism or gender bias by maintaining their poverty. They were never slaves.

Gays are fighting for equal marriage rights which is justly a human rights issue but it's apart of the lifestyle end NOT the Humans rights THAT MAKE US HUMAN. It's about happiness that is covered in the United States Constitution and the RIGHT to it. In this country they have the right to be happy. Yes they lost opportunities once their identity was discovered , jobs and advancement but they were an continue to be a population in hiding which is far more than Blacks and Women could ever do, there was no concealing your identity for them so I find it...DEPLORABLE to equate the struggle of women and minorities in this country.

To this date hispanics are still underrepresented in American politics and on American TV and yet their are the fastest growing population group whose kids are 48% of the US growth. Hispanics are a RICH culture that many people appreciate and have become a part of.

So many black children were inspired by Star Trek. Martin Luther King told Nichelle Nichols that she was inspiring whole generations...like Dr. Jemison who not only was black but was also a woman going to space achieving a dream most blacks and women never thought they could aspire to. Hispanics need that inspiration to, they need to be inspired to go to school and not become the poverty stricken culture as blacks have. They need to see I CAN instead of I can't when they watch their favorite television show. Their families need to be shown the way. Their has never been a hispanic in that chair and that needs to change.

Putting things in perspective it is long past time for Hispanics to be represented in Trek a future they are most definitely apart of. My view on Trek and gay will not be shared by all and I doubt the majority but it is in the proper perspective.

There is no gay agenda (or I'm an agent of the illuminati). It's part of how TV writers cram as many minorities into everything as possible so they can be like "See? It's not just rich straight white guys". The only agenda is that writers see gays as a minority, and thus cram in the obligatory gay (next to, I dunno, the black guy, the spunky white girl, the nerd, etc.). Now, if gays weren't socially considered to be a minority or "abnormal" by Joe Public, then there wouldn't be quite as much of a push to put gay characters in TV and movies.

Now, I'm not demanding that a character be gay, or saying you're wrong not to want a gay character in Trek, let's be clear.

I guess if a character were to be gay, I would prefer they not beat us over the head with it, just have the person in a relationship. TV shows don't go "HEY CHECK IT OUT, THIS GUY DATES GIRLS" so why should they be like "HEY CHECK IT OUT, THIS GUY DATES GUYS".

If the captain is gay, it shouldn't even be apparent for most of the first season, and revealed to the audience by some incidental, offhand comment. And thereafter treated as a not-very-important aspect of the character because in the 23rd/24th C, there's no dramatic tension to being gay, and therefore it's not good plotline fodder.

The sexual orientation of the actor is, of course, irrelevant.

The next captain should be played by Eric McCormack, who is a huge Trek fan and a darned fine actor, and I'll go one step further than Temis - he shouldn't be gay or straight. He should be bisexual, possibly with a general preference for one sex or the other - just like almost every other member of the crew - since I presume (read "hope") that by the 25th century, humanity will have moved beyond a need to categorize and judge our relationships beyond "I love whom I love", and "I'm physically attracted to whom I am physically attracted to."

And I'll agree with those who have suggested that sexuality should be a very minor and rarely displayed aspect of the Captain. In the tradition of Kirk and to an extent, Picard, the Captain is first and foremost married to the ship. (It might be interesting, though, if this captain referred to the ship as "him". ;))

My opinion on the topic of the next captain is always in flux, btw: Now I'm thinking she should be played by Tasmin Archer. :techman:

Why? It's almost always been cringe-worthy when Trek tries to do romance, dating back to the sixties. Just give me compelling sci-fi and leave the romance on the cutting room floor.

I knew this would elicit some reaction. My ideas was that the if the Captain was (or if they ever decide to make a character) gay, it wouldn't be their defining characteristic, just as much part of who they are the same way they if they had blonde hair, or brown eyes, or blue skin.

Trek has had almost every other 'type' of person as a series regular (eg visually impaired, Native American, female), they should now include someone of a different orientation. I would think that a Trek audience would be open to such things, after all IDIC is a core principle of the franchise.

When was the last time that Trek actually took a risk? I found that Voyager and Enterprise were played far too safely, especially next to series like FarScape.

But that's just my thoughts,
Bry
