The New USS Discovery....

How you thought the clearily dated Connie looked newer and more advanced is beyond me. No non trekkie is gonna ever think the NX is the less advanced and older of the two
You have evidence of this, right? A study, perhaps that compares the two designs and asks people to rank the ships in terms of technical advancement? Because, surely you're not just making things up again, right?

Other than the fact it looks old as frak with clear 1960's design elements? Cn you prove it looks more advanced? Because it sure as heck looks primitive and dated. Once more, go ahead, ask a non trekky which one looks newer, it wont be the TOS ship, it has too many dated features and its too low on detail.

Ah, you don't have anything like objective proof, then.

Look, we get it, you don't like the original Enterprise, and that's okay. Just don't try to pull one over on us by making claims you can't support. Don't pull made-up 'facts' out of your rectum and claim it is somehow gospel, because it's really just an intellectual turd.

I do not dislike it, but its dated and shows its age. You guys are making claims it fits, knowing it does not. Honestly, ignoring what you know of trek, how can you say it looks newer? Be honest here? Its got 60 tear drop designs elements, its got 60 style "space" portholes, its got a very primitive and rather unrealistic and workmen like pylon set up and lets not forget the groovy lights on the nacelles and it simply looks older. Every thing about it screams 60's.

You guys simply can not be honest about it. And don't give me the "oh Ipod" as it is too clunky for that, the JJ ship is an ipod inspired design.

I'm being perfectly honest ... the original Enterprise really does look more advanced than the NX-01. The NX-01 is bumpy and clunky looking, with odd bits sticking out all over the place.

Mind you, I'd like to see minor changes to the old girl. I'd like to see subtle improvements made to the warp nacelles and connecting pylons. And improved texturing to hint at the scale of the ship better. See some of Vektor's or Deg3d's work for inspiration. The original ship, shot with modern techniques, easily stands up on screen.

I don't see it man, you are asking for a redesign. I don;t think the ships stands up and two folks I roped into watching "Though a mirror darkly" agreed it looked dated and the less advanced of the two. The TOS ship just looks old, yes its sleek, in parts but not the right way to make it look sleek. It just looks primitive and thrown together.

I do agree, for the 1960's she was a lovely design, and she reflects her decade. But she just looks her age and primitive. Have you ever seen some of the Phase II redesigns? Its pretty much the TMP ship, with a TOS saucer and hull texture.

So we are heading toward the refit at Warp 9! :techman: Seriously, I would have no problem accepting that Discovery, as a much newer ship then the Constitution class, already uses many of the refit elements.

What I would personally love for them to do is show us a Cage Connie, the TOS one, and a Phase II Connie, to represent different sub classes. It does not have to be prominent they could sneak it in the background, the way Battlestar Galactica showed the TOS Enterprise, and Serenity.

Oh, and could I have a Constitution Luxury Class, as an Admiral's Yacht?

So, Okay, Kirk's ship by this time frame is older then, because when he got it, it was already after pike had it for 5 years?
The TOS universe is the stories, the events , not how it looked on a 50 year old TV show. "In a mirror darkly" was an anniversary show, and it shows why this fails. The TOS ship looked dated, campy and out of place next to the advanced and far more modern NX. They tried to update the outside but it failed, as did believably once it showed the campy, dated and 1960's inside and uniforms. To quote a non trek friend " Looks like a low budget fan film that some how roped in real actors"

They are ditching the dated 1960's TOS look. That look is the lameduck, we see it once and never again, the series creator ditched that look. The Shouzhon(sp?) and Discovery are clearly ships drived from the look of the ENT series and not the dated 50 year old 1960's era TOS look. Who knows what and ENT version of the Constitution looks like, but it will not be a 1960's TV show.

So they are redoing the classic Era Constitution Class then? I wonder what they decide to go with.. a version that mimics aspects of JJ and the Movie perhaps? IDK, I always thought the simplified nature of the TOS enterprise exterior looked more advanced being less choppy techy stuff on it, to me the sleeker a design the more advanced it is. Yet, I can see how the NX and the TOS Enterprise are pretty far off in terms of looks. It would fit better having a more Movie refit type style to the look of the ships. In the classic series, the Constitution was the workhorse of the Federation. Given that Discovery will be an experimental ship, I would expect to see it look much different. I am just wondering how they plan to retcon the Constitution and the uniforms, they worked in the JJ series. But you're right the classic era costumes in Enterprise did feel out of place and out of date.

But there will always be a soft spot for the Classic TOS (remastered CGI edition) Constitution class for me in my ship's of the line collection.

We have heard nothing about the Constitution at all. I would be a bit shocked if they used the TOS version, but I really hope they do not go with the JJ version. Its just off somewhere. I think a TMP ship with a more modern texture would work fine, IMO the TOS ship just shows its age too much, I just do not think it fits since ENT.

IIRC there were only 13 Connies, but that was likely retconned.

The NX-01 was designed to appear more primitive than the 1701. Whether that was successful or not is essentially in the eye of the beholder.

It looks more primitive next to the TMP version, but looks better than the TOS version. Well until you go inside the TMP version anyhow lol.

To state the obvious:

  • The TOS ship was designed over a decade before any of the others; and
  • All ships designed after the ST:TMP ship lift certain detailing and cues - distinctive paneling and windows, for example - to some degree or another from the TMP version; therefore
  • All ships designed from TMP onward share similarities that TOS does not, so
  • Putting a post-TMP ship into the supposed "timeline" prior to the TOS ship will cause the TOS ship to look out of place.

Psion basically said what I was going to.

This is why it's more advanced

Which was just fluff, I asked which ship looked more primitive, the Connie could have been a JJ version or any update and the story would have been the same. The TOS ship was cool 50 years ago, but shows its age and as pointed out, its the most primitive looking trek ship as it was the first.

Which looks more primitive a 1969 Corvette Stingray or a 2017 Soul?

Of course the TOS ship looks more primitive - the resources didn't exist to build it with the detail and complexity of the other ships even had all that occurred to the designer.

It's kind of beside the point, isn't it?

No, that is my whole point. Its always gonna look out of place. This is not a slam on it, its just reality. The ship will need an update to make it fit.
