Large sections of the design (specifically the arrow) have no features, instead relying entirely on textures to give the model depth and weight. That'd certainly speed up rendering time, but the lack of shadows and detail/angles have a tendency to make things look toylike on a lower budget, especially on an HD screen.

That may be why they decided to have a cutout section in the saucer. It's where the camera will be most focused on and as such needs some depth to it. That or the overall model just looked boring.

The nacelles are overly elongated (and again lacking in detail), but I guess they were trying to focus on making it look good in limited angles.

The Shenzou is strangely the opposite for a non-hero ship. It's model is highly detailed, with different angles, features and no large flat spaces. It actually looks like it's had the most effort put into it.

For the Discovery possibly. Just as likely is that they're still rendering them or they don't like the scenes they've rendered.

For the Shenzou a lot of her scenes are probably spoilery, so yeah, they'll be saving them.

They have to show us Discovery and Lorca at some point. SDCC panel is a logical choice :vulcan: Jason Isaacs is attending the panel today, they have to introduce us to his character.

Why are all starfleet ships on the trailer so orange?

Are they trying to emulate some of the art from TMP where the enterpise looks copper colored?

After the SDCC trailer I'm convinced that the Discovery will surprise us. The trailer's quick shot of the ship was static and barely moved before the warp effect; IMO it was pretty hastily done for the trailer because they haven't yet gotten around to doing the VFX of the episodes she's in. As such, compared to the completed VFX shots of the Shenzhou, Discovery has yet to full spread her wings in completed material.

And as unlikely as it seems now, it's still possible that they can bait and switch us out a completely new ship for Discovery, and this whole thing has been a massive deception. We haven't seen any shots of the Discovery sets yet (aside from MAYBE a lab or sickbay or something), and certainly nothing showing an actual diagram of the Discovery in the background of a finished shot. While I"ve grown to like what we've got, I think there's some latitude for us to be blown away.

    Jesus, I hope so.

That one shot of the Discovery in the trailer was probably the ugliest single part of the whole trailer... and there were a whole lot of unwashed klingons in it.

    Ha-ha....

Whelp, I think I will resign myself to the position of Klingon apologist. There's a role I never thought I would ever take on.

See, that's the kicker to me. The ONE shot they put in of Discovery, and they do what looks to me as a *really* unflattering angle. That, and the renders and such we've seen so far, especially compared to the Shenzhou, just seem to... Unfinished to me. Like I said, I think we're in for SOME sort of surprise when our first look a her really comes around.

I see but why are ships orange?

They seem more bronze to me. The Vulcan shuttle from TMP had virtually the same color palette. Something could be inferred from that. Top view of the DSC herself also kind looks like a stylized IDIC symbol. Remove the nacelles and you have it for the most part.

I don't see it as unflattering, it actually looked really intriguing to me. Sort of like a weird futuristic video game ship. I've got too much in my head to express it properly, but there was something kind of cool and to a degree 'off' about it.

They're still hiding their main ship. That is not a good sign.
At this point the design should be finished, otherwise they run into great trouble with post-production of the special effects. And the current design looks like shit. And the producers know that, otherwise they would show it in the trailer.

I don't know what's going on there behind the scenes. But whatever it is, it's probably going to make for a great documentary once the DVDs are out...

They're trying to be mysterious about it. They want it to be a bigger surprise.

    The model is done.

And the ship was in the trailer, and it was on the comic-con poster

Moreover, it's from an angle making it impossible to tell whether there really are cutouts in the saucer...

It's not a surprise when they already showed us the final model, on papers, posters and a shot in the trailer. They're hiding the CGI model, because it looks like shit. And they know it looks like shit. And they want to avoid the backlash they had the first time they showed a model that looked like shit. So they kept it hidden. Even though it will be the focal point of the series.

This is only postponing the backlash until later. To a point when it might already be too late. They have a serious problem at hand, and it's obvious they don't know how to handle it, and time's running out to solve it with the release date coming closer and closer.

Given the reactions to Klingons, if accurate, then I don't blame them.

But, I suspect it's simply wanting it to be a surprise. Probably not as nefarious as it appears.

Are we sure it's their "main ship"? For all we know, 10 of the 15 episodes will be centred on the USS Shenzhou.

That's quite a lot of hyperbole there. You're not privy to their thought processes. You don't know how they feel about the ship. They may absolutely love the ship and are just waiting for the right moment to show it. Or for all we know maybe there isn't enough of it to show because it's only in the pilot for a few minutes. And the CGI model is done. We saw it in the trailer warping away. All the VFX are done for the pilot.

As for the previous "backlash?" Guess what? The ship doesn't look all that different from when we saw it in the promo. Longer nacelles and a gap in the saucer; that's pretty much it. So I don't think they're as worried about "fan backlash" about the design of a ship as you're making it seem.

Here's a thought: Maybe they don't really care all that much about how their ships look, and that's why there isn't some big reveal yet. They certainly don't care about making the ships look anything like TOS. Maybe they're more interested in making a good story.

My thinking is that since Discovery is the main ship for the series, there is a desire to have a grand reveal or beauty shot when introducing her in the series.

Yeah, that doesn't make any sense.
I doubt they're hiding it because of that.

They probably want some sort of grand reveal in the show.

Maybe something like the reveal of Big E in TMP. Just hopefully not as lengthy
